Another Feb. Turned Jan. Baby

I know I have been primarily a lurker, but I would like to post my birth story to celebrate.Due to several complications with me (diet controlled GD, PIH, etc.), we were originally going to have a medically necessary induction on Jan. 21st. I had been on bed rest for the last 2 months. However, the thyroid nodule that came up during my pregnancy decided to grow more and start causing me difficulties with breathing and swallowing. It was decided that a c-section would be less risky than me going through an induction, potentially loosing my airway, and having to have an emergency c-section (which I can't have general anesthesia, so we wouldn't have the time for a spinal block to take effect if needed).

I went from my last OB appt. straight to L&D for admission for the c-section to happen on Jan. 19th (36w5d, original EDD was 2/11/11). Luckily, baby had been measuring in the 93rd percentile for size and had been passing his NSTs and BPPs with flying colors. Due to all of my health complications, I had 2 OBs, a General Surgeon, 2 Anesthesiologists, and a Pediatrician at my c-section just in case. Other than me being difficult to place a spinal block on (I have narrow vertebral spaces and it took 4 tries) and some nausea, the c-section went very well.

At 11:13 AM on Wednesday, January 19th, 2011, my husband and I welcomed our first child, a son named Thorsten Edward measuring 19 3/4" and weighing 8 lbs. 2.3 oz. into our lives. His Apgar was 9/10. It was so exhilirating to hear him cry for the first time and meet him. My husband was very supportive and as always, was my biggest cheerleader. My BPs stablized and lowered after the surgery. Thorsten did have some significant weight loss and high bilirubin levels, requiring him to stay an extra day, but he has been doing great otherwise. We had to supplement with formula for a couple of days, but have since gone back to EBF, which is nice.

We were lucky to have had an excellent medical team working together to deal with my medical issues that came up during the pregnancy, and that the surgery went without major complications. We are also truly blessed to now have our precious baby boy in our lives. Good luck to everyone waiting on their babies to come.
