The stupid/vain thing I am worrying about now

I will preface this by saying I realize this is completely trivial and vain and I shouldn't even be thinking about this, DH thinks I am nuts Lol!

I got my presurgical packet and have been reading through it.  It goes down the list of do's & don'ts etc.... It's saying no lotions, nailpolish, jewelry, hair product, make up. I kind of expected that but hadn't put much thought into it. Most of that I couldn't care less about but now I'm stressing thinking about having to show up with zero make up on. Not that I wear a lot on a day to day basis but I usually don't leave the house without at least a tiny bit of foundation, if nothing else.  I don't know why I just feel really insecure without it.  I was bummed enough when I realized I'm going to have to skip shaving for the 5 days beforehand (yuck) now I'm going to feel even more frumpy/disgusting.

Please someone tell me I'm not the worst, most vain person in the world. Am I being totally ridiculous to worry about this?

  • I get it.

I hate leaving the house without makeup but concealer and mascara is all I wear though.I have pretty dark circles so if I don't wear under eye concealer I look like hell (IMO anyways, DH disagrees of course)...plus I am pretty pale right now too so that doesn't help the whole dark circle thing.

  • Why do you have to skip shaving?

I don't think you're being too silly. It's just one more thing that's got to be different about that day and when other people tell us how to do things, sometimes it rubs us the wrong way. Especially when we're already nervous about that situation as it is. It'll be okay, though. Smile

  • I think it would upset me a bit too, you are already having to have a surgery, which means you probably won't be comfortable. Its just another thing that would make you feel comfortable/better and you can't do it.

  • I have really pale skin too, I've been compared to Wednesday Adams at times ( nice huh?)  so that doesn't help. Ugh, I just need to get over it but I just want to look/feel semi NORMAL! That's not too much to ask.

They say shaving (anywhere) leaves you at risk for infection so they say none of that for 5 days prior.

Honestly though, I had a C section with DD after a failed induction attempt and when they did it I was freshly shaved AND had makeup on and I had no issues with my recovery at all. I told DH I am really tempted to just wear a tiny bit of concealer and shave the day before.

  • Are we talking a c/s here or some other type surgery? If we?re talking a c/s then why no make-up or nail polish all the others I can understand. Is there a problem with a woman having her nails polished or her face made presentable? You tell me!

  • I see the ladies on TV having c/s's have make up on all the time! What, do they get special privileges because their c/s is being nationally televised??

Either way, I can't foresee a little eyeliner being too much to ask for. If it is, they can hand you a wet wipe to make you wipe it off IMO! I bet if you wore at least that much no one would say anything to you.

Lol, you know I was thinking this the other day. I forget what show I was watching but the girl had on a full face of makeup and what looked like a fresh mani/pedi. WTH?!

They do this for all surgeries so they can test for capillary response (in your nails) and see natural facial coloring to check for proper circulation/oxygen levels, etc. Basically they want to be able to tell right away if you're not getting proper air or blood circulation and makeup and nail polish hinder that. Also, nail polish interferes with the pulse oximeter they put on your finger.

    Yup, exactly

  • I'd not known of this. So thanks ladies. Just a little curious on this one.

    ETA correct typo!

  • I'd put on mascara and a little bronzer and if anyone asks, just say you're not wearing any.  Gotta look good for pictures afterwards, right?  Wink

  • I've had a lot of surgeries in my life and I'd probably go for some super basic make up, too. If it's not enough to really make a difference in their medical examinations, no one will say anything. I also worked in Day Surgery for a while as a CNA and no one ever really says anything about the make up. Just don't overdo it so they can tell if your skin color is off, etc. Smile

  • You are not vain. Well maybe but if you are than so am I :) I showered last night and blew my hair out in case my water broke in the middle of the night since I lost my MP yesterday. And I fully intend on wearing some foundation into L&D! I have gained 60 lbs, I am pale, I look like total sh!t and when people want to start taking pictures of me and my double chin from the worst possible angles...then I deserve to look halfway presentable. And so do you!

Most hospitals use a little thing that they clip on your finger to check the oxygen levels in your blood/heart rate, nail polish screws with the readings.
