POLL: rate your diaper pail!

which diaper pail do you have?

do you like it? why/why not?

we went with a small stainless steel Simple Human step trash can and it works great.  it uses grocery bags as liners and I just take out the trash once a day.  I love being able to recycle AND not having to buy ridiculous refills.

BUT it occurred to me this morning as I was changing it and my dog was sniffing around.. she (my dog) could totally use her nose to open the lid and could easily reach in, pull out, and tear up the contents.

Indifferent

thankfully she hasn't yet, now that I realize she COULD I'm reconsidering getting a diaper genie type pail.. I still think they're over priced, ugly and to an extent disgusting (I don't want diapers sitting around the nursery for a week, even if I can't smell them) but they ARE dog proof.

  • I think I have the same exact simple human small step can (got mine at Target).  I love that the inner can has the'holders' on the sides for the plastic grocery bag handles to hold it in place.  My dogs are very small so I don't think that they would be able to get it open.

When y friend's kid was over the other day I put the can up on a case of diapers b/c he wanted to play inthe garbage (figures...).

isn't that genius?!?!  it's the best small trash can I have ever bought. well worth the 30 dollars and I'm a cheapo.  my dog isn't huge but she's JUST tall enough that she wouldn't have a problem really diggin in :(

  • i have a diaper genie (from my shower that i did not register for.  i actually received THREE diaper genies lol so i kept one).  i totally think its ugly and it doesnt really contain the sh!t stink but it works.  it usually gets filled once a day so it doesnt sit in there for long.  it does suck though that you have to buy refills.  i think one refill lasts about 2-3 wks for me.  but like you said its doggy proof, so thats awesome.

i have a dekor.  i like that  the liners are such that you create your own size.  if something is really stinky i can take the bag out regardless of whether it's full.  it's really good at knocking down the smell too.  it's been in our room and we haven't had an issue.

I have this two. And two small dogs. We keep our dogs confined to the LR, dining, kitchen area using a walk through baby gate. Could you do something like that or shut the door to the nursery when you're not home (I'm assuming it's in your nursery).

yup I have been closing the nursery door when I'm gone and she really doesn't even express much interest in it other than when I'm changing it, but we're hoping to get more carpet soon and I just know the one day I forget to close the door I will come home to torn up diapers everywhere and crap ground into the floor :(

     This exactly!

  • I have a Diaper Genie. I like it. I don't think it is too ugly, just pretty plain looking and it is hidden in the corner of the nursery. It doesn't take up a ton of room, either.

I have solved the "having to buy refills" problem as well because a while ago some super-genius posted this on the 0-3 month board:

    https://www.ehow.com/how_4671817_money-diaper-genie-ii-refills.html

It works, too. I just use use Target brand trash bags and put a little baking soda in the bottom.

  • I use a plain pail and grocery bags. DD has been having 1 big poop a day, so that's when I empty it! :) It works great for us and I think it's nice emptying it every day because we'll never have a smell.

My sister had a fancy diaper pail and it seemed like the smell eventually permeated the plastic...yuck!

    All This

We empty it every other day or so and haven't had any probs with odor. Also, it does keep out the pets.

  • We have a small regular trash can with a lid up in the nursery and we use the diaper sacks (kind of like the dog poop bags, but for diapers).  They have a powdery scent to them so they mask any smell that the diapers may have.  Our two dogs can't be bothered by that trash can.

  • Diaper Dekor and I LOVE it! It's a step can, so you can throw the diaper away one handed while still keeping a hand on the baby. When the lid opens, it's got a little door you drop the diaper through. That little door can lock so little toddler hands can't get into it. And that system would also keep the dog out.

And like PP said, you cut bags to your own size (it has a built in blade inside, which is also locked away from little hands) so you can make it a small bag or fill it all the way up. We've used it since M was born and we're still on the bag insert that came with it. You can buy refills or you can use normal 13 gallon trash bags, which is my plan once this thing runs out. Best part...no smell!! I love this thing!

  • We have the Munchkin/Arm & Hammer pail and really like it.  It isn't huge but we only have to empty it maybe every five days?  The bags are really easy to change and the pail automatically sprinkles a little baking soda on the pile each time you close it.  We've had absolutely no smell issue at all and the pail is pretty cheap.  I think you can find it for $20-$25 and the refills are usually $5-$6 for a box of 10.

  • I have the Diaper Genie II Elite and i love it.  We keep it in between the changing table and the rocker so it is not visible from the doorway into the room.  I never notice a smell either.  I cut the bag about every 3 days so it doesn't get too full.  I don't mind the cost of the refills because I was able to get a bunch of coupons for them and bought them on sale at Target so it hasn't been too expensive...yet.

  • We have a small Simple Human can, too, and love it. My dog doesnt try to get in it though (and it's in a spot he can't squeeze into). We use cheap 4-liter trash bags (store brand, like $3 for a box of 50). We empty it every 3-4 days. It's not our only changing station - it only gets used at night and in the morning. Downstairs we change her at the PnP and I throw those diapers in a lidded trash can in the garage because it's really close.
