$150 well spent? urgh. *vent*

My cousin is getting married July 30 and I was asked to be a bridesmaid. We went bridesmaids dress shopping today. I am normally a size 8ish, and the sales girl said she would put me in a size 10 dress if I was going to wear it today, but since I'll just have had a baby (EDD 7/9) and I'll be nursing, they ordered me a size 16!  It seems like that will give me....um....TONS of room to grow. I know they order up a size so they can take the dress in, but jeez.  And $150. I can think of so many more enjoyable things I could have spent that money on than a muumuu.

I'm very happy for my cousin. Very annoyed by the timing and feeling sorry for myself. Sigh.

  • eh - it's just a number. You want the dress to fit you and to feel comfortable in it, not like a stuff sausage. You're spending that money for your cousin, don't forget, not just a dress. I totally understand our changing bodies are difficult to deal with at times, but this will be fine for you. It's much easier to take a dress in than let it out.

  • You know, I've spent so much money on being a bridesmaid in the last 2 years that I'm thinking I'll decline the next offer I get.  I know it's an honor, but I spent a fortune!

Hopefully you'll be too small for the dress and they'll have to get you a different one.  :)

  • Hope you know a good seamstress!  I know some of the bridesmaid dresses sizing runs really whacky based on your bust/hips measurements though.  I was in one where they had to get me an 18 but in clothes I wore a 14.  Had to take it in a ton on top, was my hips that threw off the sizing. Stick out tongue

  • Hopefully you'll have to really alter the dress so that it fits you, better to have it bigger and alter small vs. smaller and having to buy a whole new dress -=) just trying to think positively. Yah, definitely can find way more things you can spend $150 on, but I'm sure it'll be an exciting, fun day!

  • Sometimes those dresses run really small, so don't beat yourself up.  There's a possibility you may need the room just in the bust.  On the other hand... I hope you don't get charged too much if you need a lot of alterations.

  • I hope they weren't just screwing you around - I know alot of places intentionally have you order bigger sizes so you have to get alterations.  In turn they then make mega money on your alterations.

  • Did you get the dress at David's Bridal? I'm getting married in March and when I went with my bridesmaid to get dresses, one of them was pregnant. She's normally a size 8 or 10 and they also ordered her a size 16 since she was supposed to give birth at the end of February. She ended up having her baby 5 weeks early though so she should need a lot of alterations. Just a FYI David's Bridal tends to be expensive for altering (if you got it there) and they will charge you a rush fee if you come in close to the wedding to have it done.

  • We are about the same size and I also need to order a bridesmaids dress for this May--and they also suggested a size 16 for me. The salesgirl told me that it's better to have it bigger and take it in, than the reverse. I was at David's Bridal and didn't see anything that I loved, and ended up ordering a maternity bridesmaids dress from Nordstrom. Hopefully it will look nice. Good luck with yours too. :)

  • This exact thing (sizing wise) happened to me. Only for my WEDDING DRESS! I feel like a cow so I completely understand where you are coming from. I went in there wearing size 8 pants from the Limited and a 36b bra and they had me leave with a (slightly roomy-- to accomodate my growing mid-section) size 16 and a 40c bra!!! Not fun for the ego!
