D.C. Area Babies

been to any of these toddler places?

Anyone have any fun places to take their toddlers during these cold winter days?  We go to a music class and like to go to the book store, but I'm looking for more ideas.  I like places where LO can run around and get out some energy.

Here's a few places on our list:

House of Bounce (manassas)

At Play Cafe (reston)

JWtumbles- open play (arlington)

Thoughts?  Any more suggestions?

  • House of Bounce in manassas is ok, but I think it's better for older kids.  My 3 year old had a little trouble on their stuff, and they only had 3 total inflatables, only one is suitable for the younger crowd (under 3).  Jumpin' Jimmies in Haymarket and Jumpworks in Manassas are a little better for the younger crowd, IMO.

  • We've been to Sport Bounce of Loudon (similar to House of Bounce) and I agree it's better for older kids.  DS (18 months) was a little scared of the moon bounces.  There is a small playroom for younger kids but he was done with that after about 20 minutes.  My older kids absolutely loved it.

JWTumbles is great for younger kids.  I highly recommend it.  They also have a PlayZone in the same building which has open play.  It's basically an indoor play structure but it's separate from the main JW Tumbles room.  It has more open play hours-I think it's open all day.  I've never taken DS in but it looks like it would be fun for toddlers.

MOBU Kids (Monkey Business) in Falls Church also has open play most afternoons.  It's great for younger kids-it's an open room with some play structures, balls and toys.  It's $8 for open play.  I take DS there often and he loves it.

Jammin Java in Vienna has kids performers in the mornings during the week.  We haven't been in a while but there's enough space for the kids to dance around.

  • At Play Cafe is a great idea but not great execution - it's pretty small space and there can be a lot of kids. I'm not sure it's worth the $$ unless you are meeting friends with kids there.
  • I agree with PP about MoBu in Falls Church. Check the website for open play times; it varies.

I've heard the Falls Church Community Center has a soft play room that's open on Fridays, which I think is free. Something to look into.

    Good luck!

  • We love JW Tumbles...it's great for weather like this. We like the indoor PlayZone area. IMO it's a little pricey, but I don't mind paying it this time of year when it's too cold to run around outside.

I had never heard of JW Tumbles before this thread. What is the difference between the Open Gym and the Playzone? How much does it cost? The website doesn't seem to give much detail. Thanks!

It is a small space - fun but yes it can get cramped.

The Open Gym is in the regular JW Tumbles space-a large open room with a climbing structure/slide, mats, balls, climbing wall and some other equipment.  The playzone is a play structure like you would see at McDonalds but smaller.  I don't know another way to describe it.  They are in two separate rooms.  The open gym hours are really limited since they have classes during the day.  The playzone is open all day if I remember correctly.  I don't know what the pricing is.  I want to say the playzone is $10/hr or half hour but I'm really not sure.

  • I've always wondered what the Playzone was.  I've been to the regular JW Tumbles on Duke St. in Alexandria for a mom group GTG, but hadn't been to the Playzone - so thanks for that info!

In this weather we hit up the free indoor play areas at Fair Oaks mall and Landmark mall.  Free is key with us right now.

Falls Church Community Center turns their regular gym into a toddler open gym on Fridays.  On half the side they put up mats and little sides and on the other half they have out tricycles and scooters.

It's really a great place.  You donate a dollar to get in.  We decided to avoid it today since the schools were out.  I think the age limit is for toddlers, but on no school days there's usually big kids there.

  • In Woodbridge and Fredricksburg they have kids in motion which is huge with quite a few inflatables and play structures.  In Dale City Sharron Baucnom (I probably spelled that wrong) has kiddie tyme where they open the gym with tons of toys and let the kids play.  It's open on schooldays only (I think it's $3 for non gym members and is from 10:30-12)
  • I am not a huge fan of At Play Cafe.  It is way too cramped even during the week.  The concept is great but when you have large numbers of kids in there, especially older ones, it becomes chaotic fast.
  • i've only been to at play cafe for a birthday party.  it was great then, but i can imagine how the small space would get quite cramped.

i also took dd to the jw tumbles playzone after reading about it on this board.  it was $10, which i thought was a bit much, but dd enjoyed herself.  at nearly 2 she was a little young for some of the climbing parts, but i think it's something she would enjoy a lot in the coming years.  it seems like a nice choice for rainy, snowy, or otherwise crappy days.

  • We like Jump N Jimmys in Haymarket.  It's like House of Bounce but they have one blow up that is strictly for toddlers.  It is helpful when there is a lot of bigger kids.

We also really like Toddlin Time of Warrenton.  Ms. Melissa is wonderful and my kids loved going there last year.  She does classes, but there is also open play times.
