When did you get LO a play kitchen?

We are thinking about getting DS this one:

Its bigger and more expensive than I wanted to buy, but I also want something thats going to last and has a lot of activities. My one concern is getting it for DS too soon. I know he would love it now, but will the novelty wear off once he's 2? Thoughts?

Re: When did you get LO a play kitchen?

  • We just got DD one for christmas and she loves it. We got the small Little Tykes one (Master Chef or something like that).

For her, it's more about the accessories that go with it and what she can do with them than the actual kitchen and what it has to offer. I thought, too, that she would have liked tons of doors and drawers and that is not the case.

We kept her little grocery cart and go grocery shopping, and then make dinner and dessert and stuff like that.

  • DD got hers right around 18 months.  She has had it for almost a yr now and still plays with it almost daily.  We have had to take away the "food" a few time b/c she likes to throw them when she gets mad though...but that is a whole other story...

Even though she plays with it a lot, I don't see her outgrowing it anytime soon, she will serve food and whatnot but stops short of using each component "realistically" if that makes sense.  I imagine it will be here through that phase of play as well.

Oh and we have a step2 and it is holding up great.

  • We got DS the kidkraft deluxe for Christmas.  He loves it, but like pp said it is more about the food and dishes then the kitchen.  It was on sale for $110 when we bought it.  I really like that it is wood.

  • We have a kids kraft red vintage kitchen. I love that it's wood and DS1 plays with it every day.

  • DS got his kitchen for Christmas last year (a few months before he turned two).

From your ticker, it looks like your son is not much over a year.  I would definitely wait at least six more months.  He'll enjoy it a lot more when it's more age appropriate.

  • about 18 months old.  Now that DS is older he wants to imitate me by making dinner or using socks as oven mits and going to cook in his kitchen.  It's cute.  He doesn't play with it daily or for an hour but he does play with it.

FWIW we found ours on a garage sale advertised on craigslist. paid $15 for an $80 kitchen.

When he was one. He didn't really get into it more recently closer to age 2. (he turned 2 a few days ago)
  • We got DD hers when she turned 2, but thought about getting it the Christmas before, when she was about 19 months. She would have been ready for it then, but we didn't want to commit the floor space in our house that soon. She still plays with it almost every day if she's home.

  • We got a nice one off of CL for about $30.  I wouldn't pay for a new one.

  • Right after DS turned 2. We wanted a wooden kitchen: https://www.amazon.com/Educo-ED821370-Gourmet-Chef-Kitchen/dp/B0024UXJ3E (it isn't that green, lol)

We loved the step in kitchen, but we saw one at Once Upon A Child and it was much shorter then we realized. DS is in the 98th percentile for height, and he would have been too tall within a year.

  • We got one for Christmas when she was 18 months. She loved it then and continues to play with it (or at least her play food) almost every day. It's a big hit when her friends are here, too.

Here's the one we have (I got it for $120):

  • My DD has had hers since last Christmas.  She was just over 18 months.  She loved it then and she loves it now!  And now my DS plays with it a bit too, which prompts her to play with it more LOL.

  • Around 18 months. We got the wooden Circo brand one from Target - it was pink and white. I think it's red this year. Not sure.

She loves it and plays with it pretty much every single day. When her 4-year-old cousins come over, they play with it, too.

I'm pretty sure she played with the play kitchen at daycare before she was 18 months old, too, but I don't remember for sure (it's amazing how quickly these details get lost).

If you buy one too soon, big deal. If you find a good price on it, go for it, I say, and I think it's a toy that'll last for several years, so it's worth it. And if he's not into it, you could always tuck it away and pull it back out and it'll be "brand new" again.

ETA: I just clicked the link on the one you're looking at, and, well, if you've got the space and the cash then it's fine, but honestly, I don't think you need one that big. We got Lily one a lot like  this one and I was afraid that it would be "too small," but it's all that we have space for. It's not too small at all, it's totally enough. For the older cousins, too. And, like PP, she's more about the accessories and stuff, too. she loves to play with the pots and the pans, the cups, etc.

  • We got a Step 2 kitchen (which they seem great so far, my friends who got kitchens that were particle board/wood have had things broken off of them already) for her 2 year birthday.  She loved it from the minute she saw it and absolutely plays with it daily (she is 39 months now).  I have a 16 month old boy too, and he likes to play with it now too.  It just doesn't seem to get old.  The kitchen and her babies are her thing!
