I love that term. The nurse at the hospital referred to breast milk as boob juice and I think it's hilarious. Anyhow, I'm just curious as to how many ounces of milk are you getting from each breast when you pump? I'm lucky if I get 1-2 ounces from each breast at a time and just wondering if this is normal. We are supplementing so this may be why my production was low but I was just curious. TIA
Re: Let's talk boob juice if you pump... ;)
Depending on the time of day, I'll get anywhere between 2-3 oz per boob. I pump into 5oz bottles. One time I wasn't paying attention and I almost overflowed a bottle!
HTH.
I let her nurse on me first before offering a bottle to finish filling her up because she never seems to get full from just me even after taking both sides. I'm thinking my milk supply is just low right now. Thanks for the encouragement everyone.
Wow.. I didn't know this!
Same here. I have a big little guy. [11lbs, 3oz at birth] He's never full and sleepy after just BFing. When I tried weaning to just BFing he'd only sleep about 20-30 minutes at a time, and it was difficult to get him there, as well. Since going back to supplementing he sleeps 3-4 hours between each feeding now.
He always falls asleep on the boob, but wakes up a few minutes later. And while asleep, he uses me as a pacifier, but.. is he still eating? Or should I break that lazy latch [like I have been doing]? This is so confusing! haha I wish I had an overflow problem!
I get 3.5 oz pretty consistently off of either side but my LO is 6 weeks old. Kellymom.com says 1.5 - 2oz per pumping session is the average so I think you're doing just fine.
Why are you supplementing? If it's because of amount only you could talk to a Lactation Consultant because you're definitely making enough milk for a 2 week old. You should check out the breastfeeding board too if you are looking for more info.
I'm supplementing because when I was EBF, LO was loosing weight. Since supplementing, she's up weight. Also, after I've fed her, she is still really fussy and doesn't sleep for very long before waking crying of hunger. Since I've supplemented, she sleeps for hours at a time like normal.
I'm jealous!
5+ oz per boob. I had an oversupply issue with dd1 and looks like I will again with this one. But I have to pump since I go back to work in 2 weeks. Otherwise I probably would have waited on pumping and just nursed.
5 oz each breast - I EP
Well your baby was just born! Give it some time.
I usually pump 4-7 oz per pump but some times I get 10-11 oz and the other morning I was so engorged from DS sleeping 7 hours that I pumped 24 oz with 3 feedings in several hours. It was insanity.
What kind of pump are you using?
I was getting about 1/2-1 ounce at 2 weeks. My pump broke and I bought a new more expensive pump.
Now I've been getting 3-4 ounces. Obviously my LO is older now too, but I don't think that's the only factor. I completely think the new pump is significantly better.
If my DH drives I get a lot more because I'm not concentrating on it so I agree
