Success after IF

Poor baby has croup. :(

Was at the ER last night from 1am till 5:30 am. Beau woke up at 12:30pm gasping for air. It was so scary. H and I got dressed and fled to the ER. When we got there, the Drs. and Nurses didn't seem so concerned which was annoying and a little comforting as well but they got him in and diagnosed him as having croup. They gave him an oral steroid and a breathing treatment and his breathing got better. Thankfully we are all back at home recovering now.

Tell me your croup stories. How long did it take for your LO to get better etc. Thanks!

  • How scary! I hope he's better very soon!
  • Poor Beau that is so scary. Maddy has it now too, it def can be scary!!

The best thing is to close the door, and turn the shower on and let the bathroom get all steamy, or fresh cold air (bundle him up and go outside for a bit, if you are in a cold climate) and a COOL mist humidifier helps at night. Good news is it is viral, and usually last only a couple of days...the nights are when it's at the worst. Hope he feels better soon!!

  • Sorry you're dealing with that.  Liliana had croup right before Christmas.  She had a cold that was getting better/almost gone and started croup in the middle of the night out of nowhere.

We took her to the drs. the next a.m. and they gave her a steroid shot.  They told us to expect to get worse the next 2 nights but she never did.  It lingered a bit the next few days mildly and was completely gone within 3-4 days.  Whew!

Running a cold-mist humidifier seemed to help.  I put her in a hot steamy bathroom a few times.  They also said to bundle them up and take them out in the cold for a bit to break up the congestion.

GL! I hope it heals up quick.

  • The good news is you're probably over the worst part.  There is always one night that is the worst.

My son had the croup when he was about 1.  That one night is dreadful - you were smart to get the oral steroid that night.  The teachers at daycare sent my son home b/c they knew it was the croup.  I never heard of it before but they told me it was "just a cold" and nothing to run to the ER about unless he couldn't breathe.  Not exactly comforting words- but technically they are correct.  For adults, it is just a cold but b/c the kids have such small airways, it makes it harder to breathe.  It still didn't make it any easier getting through that night.  We got the oral steroid the next morning at our pedi.  The oral steroid makes all the difference.  I read about Croup and it said it follows the same pattern - one really bad night followed by better nights for the next 3 days and by the 4th or 5th day, it is gone.  My son's croup followed that pattern.  I hope your (adorable) son gets better quickly too!

The steam in a bath is good - but you need to follow it with cold air and then the steam and then the cold.  That helps their airway swelling shrink - but the oral steroid will do the same thing.

  • Mine got better really fast (a day or so, if I remember correctly).  We didn't have steroids either, just lots of the humidifier!  It sounds so much worse than it is.
