i'm in arlington, and the country website had a list of daycares. i figured out how far each was from my house and then started cold calling.
Ditto. I went on the website and I could see how long they had been licensed, any violations, where they were located, hours etc. It really helped narrow down who to call.
I started with the MD LOCATE page and used that to cross references places advertised on Craig's List (so that I knew that had openings). There's also an MD list of daycare violations and licenses. I can't find it right now, but it tells you when they were last inspected and any infractions.

Post on the DC Urban Moms Forum daycare page for suggestions.
Go through the Montgomery County website (I assume you're in Montgomery County?).
