Re: calhoun53009- article regarding SAHMs with MBAs

  • Interesting, I know you didn't post it for me, but this is very true with my friends.  All my Dr. friends work, many part time.  One of my Dr. friends is having her 4th child and works 24 hours a week, in just 2 days.  Not really possible in my previous Corporate Finance career.  I looked around and no one and I mean not one single person with small children didn't have a SAHW/H, a live in retired parent, or a live in nanny (only one person whose wife was a teacher).  One family with older children, teens, had a mom who worked at home and a live out nanny.

The other reason is that we don't need to work if we marry someone like us and tax rates make it not as lucrative to go part time, where as being a doctor, you can go part time and still make good money, there is not the part time penalty from an income perspective in many specialties that there is with business.

I don't really buy the less loyal & more nebulous part, maybe than doctors, but not really than lawyers.  I know a number of MBAs who work to pay their student loans.   I think it is just a lot easier for doctors to find good part time positions.  I could get a part time job, not in corporate finance at my old company (0 part time jobs out of 2,000 employees in finance), but I wouldn't earn 1/2 of what I did before.  I would earn a 1/4 and I would no longer get my bonus, which is a substantial part of my comp.

Fortunately, DH has the other side, he earns much more now that I don't work.  He has been promoted a number of times in the last for years, so he makes up for my lost income + some.

  • Thanks!  I was actually discussing my original post and the responses with DH last night.  We both agree that it's what we want and what we've planned for, so we're going to try our hardest to ignore what the debbie downers say.  At the end of the day, it's our life and our choices, not theirs.  Thanks again for posting this article Smile
