Napping: light or darkened room?

We just started sleep training and the book suggested keeping it pretty dark in the room even for naps. He's now napping with the shades down and it's pretty dark in there...almost like nighttime. I hope this doesn't somehow mess with his nighttime sleep or interfere with him napping elsewhere if we ever have to be out.

How does your LO nap...light vs. dark?

Re: Napping: light or darkened room?

  • unfortunately her blinds don't do a very good job of making it dark in her room so she naps in the light.

I don't think having a dark room for nap time will mess with his night sleep.   The suggestion of keeping the nursery light during naps is more for newborns who have day vs night confusion.  Now that your LO is older he can nap in the dark and be just fine at night.

  • Dark, like really, really dark lol.  Up until she was 4 weeks she slept in a bassinet in DH and I's room, we have black curtains so it stays pretty dark in there.  Therefore, she became used to sleeping in the dark.  So, when we moved her to her room I had to buy room darkening liners and chocolate brown curtains.  Otherwise she would. not. sleep.

It never messed with her night time sleep either.  My LO has never been a good napper while we are out and about.  If we are home and she is in her room, she sleeps at least 2 hours for her am and pm nap.  GL.

  • dark..like nighttime style dark.  so far no issues between day and night.
  • I fall into the "the nursery blinds do a crappy job of blocking out light" category. She sleeps just fine in day light. I slept better when the sun was shining ni my room as a child too. The warm sunlight kept me asleep longer.

  • The shade is down but some light comes in. Even when it's totally dark in his room during a nap it hasn't messed with his night sleep. I think at this age, they are much more in tuned to what type of sleep they need to be doing.  DS seems to really have our nighttime routine down pat- the minute we start getting him in his sleeper, he's rubbing his eyes.  I think those cues help him to know it's time for nighttime, continual sleep.
