Stay at Home Moms

preschool (from a lurker)

Sorry if this is a commonly discussed area but:

What do most SAHM do re: preschool? I know a lot of 2 parent working families do full- time preschool but was curious how often your LO goes to preschool if you  stay home. My oldest will be 3 in a few months, I was thinking of sending him part time 1/2 day / 2 days per week.

Thanks in advance!

Re: preschool (from a lurker)

  • I am a lurker as well but love this board.  :)  My son is MOM out one day a week this year and next year. Then when he turns three he will do 1/2 days twice a week.   That is the standard among my Stay at home moms/friends.

  • The first year of preschool we did two mornings a week. Second year is threeornings a week. Next year is kindergarten but it will only be five mornings. If it was all day, I would have increased preschool time.

  • First year for us is 2 mornings (age 2.5)

    Second year is 3 mornings

Third year (pre-K) is 5 mornings

Our K is full day and I wanted a good transition.

Sending your kids to preschool depends on a lot of factors - finances being a big part of them, especially as a SAHM.

  • My DS will be 3 in March and we are pretty sure we will start him in September.  It would be just 2 days a week, from 9-11:30.

I think it will be good for both of us

  • When my kids were preschool age I did 3 y.o. preschool(2days/week 2.5 hour sessions), then I did 4 y.o. preschool the following year (3 days/wk, 2.5 sessions).
  • We're sending our daughter this fall when she's 3.5.  She'll be going 2 days a week for 2.5 hrs each day for at least the 1st semester.

Since she'll be in preschool for two years the plan is to increase the number of days she goes until she's up to 5 days a week.  Our town has a full day kindergarten program so like Harriet said, this would be a good transition.

  • My son started a MDO/preschool program in September at 17 months. This year he goes one day a week-just 1/2 a day. He will go 2 days for both his 2nd and 3rd year and then 3 days when he turns 4.

  • Two mornings a week. Next year, it will be three mornings a week.
  • My daughter is also 3 and she is starting a 2 day/week preschool in the fall.  It's 2 1/2 hours per session and I think it will be good for her to get some socialization and be away from me for a little.

  • Stay at home parent or not, DH and I both consider Preschool a must.  DD 1 attends 4 mornings a week (Mon-Thursday) for 2 1/2 hours a day and DD2 attends the same hours on Tues/Thurs.  Next year DD1 will be starting Kindergarten and DD2 will move up to the 3 year old Preschool class three days a week.  The following year she will do 4 days a week in the 4 year old class.  When DS is old enough he will go 2, 3, and then 4 days as well.

It has been really great for them and both girls adore going.  We send them to a place that only does preschool (run by a church) so it's not part daycare and part preschool.

  • When my DD turned 3 last March, she did Tue/Thur 9-11:30.

Then we did a summer session and now for 2010-2011 school year, she goes MWF 9-12.

It was a total lifesaver especially because she started right after I had our second baby.

I think at this point she could even use more time in school, but it would of course be more expensive.

  • DD1 will be doing preschool this fall. T&R 9-11:15
The following year it's MWF same hours
Our K is still only half day so I think this is the perfect schedule for us.

  • Hi and welcome to the board!!!

Emily goes 4 days every week from 9am-12pm.  The majority of Preschools in our area require kids to be potty-trained and they attend as many days as they are old: 2yrs9mos (the youngest they can start) go 2 days, once they turn 3 they go 3 days, etc.

  • I'm a lurker on this board as well...I find myself coming here more and more...

My daughter goes 3 days a week from 8am - 12pm. I became a SAHM at the end of January 2010. Before then we did the full time thing.
