OK, so I was going to get my hair foiled yesterday (waited til after first tri to be extra safe).... so I asked my OB at my appointment Wednesday just to double-check. It seems from reading on here that most OBs say it's okay, at least after first tri. Mine said he doesn't think it's a good idea to color my hair! I was actually surprised. He said no studies have been done on it and probably never will be. He said it's "probably" okay, but he'd prefer that I don't, just in case. So, I cancelled my appointment, but my roots look terrible. I've been getting blonde highlights for years. If I wait until after baby is here, I'll have 6 inches of brown roots! Sigh...I guess this is mostly just a vent.
Would you "cheat" and get the foils anyway?
Re: ugh...ultra-conservative OB re:hair color
I'm on the err on the side of caution side. I actually got low lites my natural color a few appointments before we got KU just so I wouldn't have to worry as much about roots.
I know a lot of people maintain highlites thru pregnancy. You could talk to your hair dresser and see what they say. I just know I have a strong gag reflex throughout pregnancy and the thought of the chemicals on my head didn't seem like a good idea. Wasn't the actual solution that I was concerned about.

I worked in a salon before I had DS and maintained my highlights the entire pregnancy. My doctor would joke that his nurse would give me a hard time (she never did) but he didn't have a problem with it.
Yes.
I am! My doctor also said no haircolor, even highlighting, but after doing a ton of reading I found that there is no evidence that it's harmful. My salon is well ventilated and nothing is directly on my scalp so I feel fine about it. Think about what our mothers and grandmothers did?! My grandmother used to get perms with all sorts of chemicals....and she smoked - everyone came out fine. Also, 2 of my close friends are k/u right now, too and we've laughed at how inconsistent our doctors' advice is. For example, my doctor said not to lift anything more than 25 lbs. One friend's doctor said no lifting at ALL, and the other's doctor said there are no restrictions.
I think it comes down to doing what you're comfortable with.
I agree. I don't dye my hair anymore, but if I was, I would definitely keep it up after 1st tri.
Yep, I would. My OB practice said that hair coloring is fine and didn't even restrict it to just 1st tri, and they're not considered "liberal" by any means. I agree with pp who said (basically) that if you ask 3 different OBs, you'll get 3 different answers.
