Baby's face swollen on one side only

I took DS to the doctor today because the whole right side of his face got all puffy and swollen. His eye was red and swollen so he could only open it halfway. Even the right side of his lips were swollen. There were also red spots all around his eye and it was itching and watery. The doctor said it was an allergic reaction, and fortunately it has gradually improved on its own over the last few hours.

Have any of you heard of this or experienced this? I gave DS a new food (grapes) on Wednesday, but two days seems like a long time to wait for such a drastic reaction. Anyway, just curious if anyone experienced this and determined what caused the reaction. Thanks!

Re: Baby's face swollen on one side only

  • If it's only one side of his face, maybe a new detergent/fabric softener, etc. on his crib sheet?

  • I haven't used any different brands of detergent/fabric softener, but I did open a new box of Bounce dryer sheets. And I noticed the box smelled a lot stronger than in the past. I actually had to move the box of dryer sheets into the garage because the smell was so strong. So maybe the new dryer sheets are more potent or something. Thanks for the suggestion -- that's a possibility.

  • That sounds like when I had 5ths disease as a kid.  It's a big scary illness when you're PG, but I don't know how risky it is for a LO.  I don't know if I'd settle for the opinion of allergic reaction on this one.
