Hi all,
I am new to Kansas City (Northland). I am seeing a reproductive endocrinologist right now but as I get further along, I have to switch to an OB. The nurse practitioner suggested that I choose my OB based on which hospital I want to deliver. But I know nothing about the hospitals in KC. I live within 10-15 miles of St. Lukes Northland, Truman Medical Center - downtown, and North Kansas City Hospital.
Any suggestions on which is the best hospital to deliver? Or do you have suggestions for a decent OB?
Re: Time to choose an OB - need advice
I'm in the same predicament. I usually just see an general practitioner, and she confirmed my pregnancy and gave me a list of recommended OB's. I live near Gladstone, so Liberty, NKC, and St. Lukes Northland Hospitals are close for me.
To help decide, I decided to tour the hospitals. The OB I was leaning towards delivers at NKC (I read this board and asked some benign questions of a friend at work who used to work at a Northland OB to help narrow down my choices), so I found info about touring on its website and called. We went yesterday and I was pretty happy with it, so we are going with it, without touring the others.
I did feel a bit ridiculous on the tour, as everyone else looked at least 6 month pregnant and I'm only 5 weeks along, but it's what I needed to do to feel comfortable!
I never considered touring the hospitals. What a great idea. I would feel a little lost and uncomfortable though because I have very little experience (actually, let me correct that...no experience) with maternity wards. I didn't grow up around babies/pregnant women. As a matter of fact, I visited one friend in the hospital after having her baby last year. And that's it!
Kind of sad huh? This whole history of no experience with pregnancy/children is coming back to bite me in the behind. LOL.
I delivered at NKCH and my practice was there as well. The practice is Hearltand Women's Health and my primary was Dr. Saunders (a female) I loved her! Very laid back and nice. You rotate to see all the Dr.'s in case you have to use them to deliver. There wasn't one that I didn't like.
My birthing experience was great at NKCH, I loved the entire staff... the nurses were great!
It makes me more excited to have our next baby knowing how well our first experience went.
Here is my OB/GYN group's website if you'd like to check them out!https://heartlanddocs.com/
This doctor popped up on my insurance list. And I've only heard good things about NKCH. You guys are providing great advice. Thanks!
Too much information is worse, IMO. Even my lactation consultant said that often teenage mothers do the best at breastfeeding because they don't know enough information to worry that anything is wrong (if that makes any sense).
You're gonna do great. I was so worried that I was going to mess up my baby or something because I had no clue what to do with a newborn... but your baby is going to let you know when he/she needs something and you just go from there.
My OB is at Northland Women?s Health which is right next door to St Luke?s North. This was my first pregnancy and I can?t image going anywhere else. The nurses at St Luke?s North were wonderful and provided me a lot of suggestions to make things much easier once I brought my son home. They also have a BF group that meets on Wed at 11am (I formula fed and still attended until I went back to work). The LC for St Luke?s attends the group along with a nurse from Peds North so if you have questions they (along with the other mothers) are more than willing to answer questions. They also have a baby scale to make sure your little on is gaining weight.
