Valentine's Day Cards

I'm curious about how other people do Valentine's Day cards for the exchange at school.

Does your child make cards or do you buy them?

Do you include anything (candy or something else)? If yes, what?

How old is your child (or ages of children)?

Anything interesting ever happen in the card exchange?

These days, we buy them. When she was in preschool, I created photo cards with a cute note. I figured they knew a 3 year old wasn't writing a card... and I knew their 3 year old couldn't read. I thought it was smart to put a photo of my daughter, so her friends would know it was her. I put simple things like "Love and happiness to my friend".

Do you include anything (candy or something else)? If yes, what? I usually make a little treat bag with some candy and trinkets. The trinkets ranged from silly frogs that jump to useful things like pencils and pads.

How old is your child (or ages of children)? 9

Anything interesting ever happen in the card exchange? Not yet

  • This will be our first year giving them out. I'll let her pick out whichever type she wants to give, and have her write her name by herself.

I'm not sure yet if I'll include anything else... I guess it depends on what the teacher is doing. I'll imagine they'll make it a party and have everyone bring in a snack. If that's the case I'll probably only give the card. If no party maybe a lollipop attached to the card.

  • Make or buy? Some years we make them, some we buy.  I leave it up to my girls to decide.

Include something with the card? It seems like most people at our school do -- I like giving pencils but we've also done stickers, candy, and little things of bubbles.

Ages? My girls are 10, 7, and 4.

Interesting thing?  I was suprised that our preschool and kinder teachers ask us to leave the "to" line blank so the kids don't take as long to pass out the cards.  I understand why but it bugs me a little.

Ditto this.  We buy and I let the kids pick out what they want.

I am pretty crafty and would love to make valentines, but my kids really like to pick out cards from the store.  Last year DS found Pokemon valentinesand he was over the moon.  Kids in his pre-K class were just starting to get into pokemon, and people thought his cards were really cool -- boys and girls alike.

DD gets frustrated because the cards are very gender-oriented.  She's just not a "girly" girl.  There's no way she'd choose Hannah Montana, Bratz, Barbie, Disney Princesses, or anything like that.  She gets frustrated at the lack of variety in the girls' cards.  I think she picked Lego cards last year.

I usually let them pick out either a small candy or pencils, and we attach a single item to each card.  We don't make a really big deal out of V-day in our home.

That would bug me too. Especially as they get older and may want to personalize it a little.
