Success after IF

dying hair: how extreme, how old, and when do you "take it down a notch"?

We all know those women who you look at and KNOW that's not their natural shade or color (as in black eyebrows and lashes but PLATINUM hair or something like that)....So I'm cool with indivduality but I wonder...."Am I too old for this?" when I look at trends (clothes, jewelry, cut of clothing, hair styles, hair colors)...I get that some people have a big negative association with gray hair and so they dye for that purpose but I'm not really talking about that - I'm more talking about highlighting, low lighting, changing your natural color in total, etc.

So, when is too old for dying your hair?

What is "too extreme"?

When is it appropriate to "tone it down"?

Thoughts?

  • I don't have a good answer, but this post made me laugh because there's a vendor who comes to our office every couple of months who used to be blonde and now she's got dark brown hair. She's in her 50s at least, but dresses like a 20-something.

  • Oh, I say never too old for any of that stuff. Hair is experimental. If it fits your personality then anything goes.
  • I think any age past college days is too old to dye your hair anything other then a natural shade. I have no issues with blonde or auburn highlights or going lighter or darker in a natural shade, I mean the wham colors like bright red, green, blue, etc.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • I'm laughing AND stalking.

I STARTED highlighting my hair 2 years ago to cover greys.  (grey not as noticeable with the blonder streaks in it too)

I'm still naturally red but the color is getting dull and needs some help now.

No clue what the answer is.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • my grandma dyed her hair ronald mcdonald red until right before she died this year...she was in her 90's.  I think it was awesome :)

I'd love to be a crazy old lady and literally have blue hair...or pink...or anything fun!!  my mom is going to be 69 this year and she dyes her hair a very natural chestnut brown..looks great!  she doesn't look her age at all!!!  now my aunt, who went white at 25, looks way older than her age..and always has.  mainly because she styles her white hair in a very old lady way...

  • Oh and to add, I have been 100% grey since I was 16. I plan on always dying my hair a brownish shade. I can not fathom going grey, I don't think any one should have to, no matter what the age.

I mostly agree with this. I think it's more about your hair being suitable for your lifestyle than age. As long as you have the right job, etc., whatever makes you happy!

  • I had massively platinum hair at my wedding (age 25). I'm naturally "dirty blonde" but def blonde - not brown. I got PG with DD and DH asked that I don't dye my hair while PG (quite the "grow out" sight as my hair came in quite red during PG!). Post birth, I dyed it a dark strawberry blonde and then it started to come back in regular blonde.

I never really went back to platinum but while sitting here 8000 months pregnant, I'd love to lighten the HECK out of my hair - not platinum but lots of highlights. I worry I'll look ridiculous. I know its hair and you can change it but....

    Girl.... DO IT!!!

    Seriously.

If it will make you feel good - DO IT.

You can always change it later but you're about to enter the realm of newborn-ness.

    No sleep.

A toddler who doesn't get that you've had no sleep.

    Life will be tough enough.

If you think this will make you feel good - DO IT.

For a while ain't nothing gonna be about how you feel about ANYTHING so  - DO IT!!!!

Sometimes the little things can make all the difference in filling up Mamma's cup so she has enough to fill up the cups of 2 little ones.

    DO IT!!!

  • Howley...you are sooo right on with this!  I got my hair done right after having both kids...I feel like if my hair looks good, then I look good.

Regarding the main question of this post...I think hair is a great way to express yourself...There are tonnes of people that have funky crazy hair that suits them to a T.  Then there are others who have very conservative hair and that's their thing.  I had an art prof. who had one blue streak in her naturally black hair (she was about 45)...and it was literally gorgeous.
