Kindle

I'm thinking of buying one. Is it REALLY worth the money? Money is a big deal with me not working right now (short term disability doesn't pay out much).

Opinions?

Re: Kindle

  • DH seems to think they are. He does not own one but has looked into them and has asked for it for his bday. He is a big reader and he doesn't mind reading off a screen (he reads books on his iPod touch now and it is a lot smaller.)

  • I love mine with all my heart.  LOVE.

And it will be nice to have with the baby because I can read it with one hand.

And you're on bedrest.  You should totally get one.  There's also games for it.

     I'm such a pusher.  LOL!

  • I love mine.  I take it everywhere.  The only downside is I used to be a library book girl because I read 1-2 books a week.  Now I'm spending $30-40 a month in e-books.  It's not a huge amount of money, but definitely something to factor into the price.

LOL Well considering I'm reading about a book a day...

I always buy from half priced books or half.com, but everything does add up. Plus I have a million books just laying around. I don't want to sell them or donate them, but I also know I probably won't re-read them.

  • I've had mine for 2 years and have over 100 books on it... can't live without it!!  If you love to read, it's a must IMHO.  :)

  • I ADORE my Kindle!  I read more now than I ever did because of the convenience and ease of reading on the Kindle.  It's been especially wonderful during sleepless nights when I can read it in bed (I got the cover with light attached) without disturbing DH.   I got it in November and I can't imagine life without it now!
  • I got one for Xmas & I LOVE it, haven't put it down since I got it. I especially love the text to speech function. As far as cost goes, as long as you aren't picky, there are a lot of cheap & free books available and I've seen a few websites mentioned as well where they offer free books. Some libraries even offer ebooks now & you can share books with others as well.

  • I don't have a kindle but a nook and love it. I'm about to get the nook color soon and love how I can share a book with a friend for a few weeks. Ereaders are just awesome IMO since I can carry a bookshelf of books while traveling and not feel the weight of it ;]

  • Funny you posted this because I just got off the phone with my brother and I was just telling him I am seriously considering getting a kindle.  He has one and absolutely loves it.  I'm convinced now....as soon as I get my tax refund that will be one of my first purchases.

I think I've decided to use my tax check too :) then put the rest in savings! I did notice that a lot of the books are more expensive than buying them used online or at HPB, then again-I guess this way they're new.

  • My husband loves his kindle.  My sister-in-law just got the color nook and it looks pretty cool too.  I say get it.  You deserve it!

  • I have one and LOOOOVE it, but more important than that my sister said it's perfect for late night feedings, changes, etc when you're trying to teach the baby that it's nighttime and to sleep - it's easy to use with one hand so you can read and not have the lights/noise of the TV.
  • I LOVE mine.

I don't want to deal with all the extra paperbacks around my house anymore. Only certain books are really worth keeping.
You can get many books for free (not often ones you want to read, but still!)

One problem? I spend waaay more on books now!  Since you can't trade the books or get hand-me-downs from family it is an extra expense. But if you are already buying your own books then I say go for it!

I have the simple wifi version and I haven't wished for the 3G yet.

Like several PP's said, e-readers are definitely worth the money!  I have a Nook and adore mine.  Several of my friends have Kindles and love theirs as well.  Did you know that a lot of libraries have Nook compatible books and you can share books with friends who have Nooks?  It could actually SAVE you money depending on how you look at it Wink
