My Snow/Parenting Nightmare

It usually takes me 35 minutes to get home from work on a bus. Wednesday it took me 7 hours due to a snowstorm. I left work on the first bus before it was even snowing. The snow hit so fast and so strongly, we were in total gridlock. We literally didn't move an inch for over an hour at one point. I ended up getting off the bus about 2 miles from my house and walking. It was nearly 11 p.m. when I got home to a house with no power.

Meanwhile, DH spent the same seven hours driving home from work. DS was at daycare because his school had been cancelled for the day. I was frantic that we couldn't get to him. The daycare director and 2 employees stayed at the center until the last kid was picked up at midnight. They made dinner for the kids, and played "flashlight games" with them when the power went out. DS was sleeping soundly when DH finally got to him. He was at daycare for 14 hours, and thought the whole thing was a big adventure.

It's supposed to snow here again next week. I'm thinking I just may not leave the house until spring.

  • So awful! I heard some kids actually spent the night at daycares bc their parents couldn't get to them. I hope your power is back on soon.

  • Wow - I wouldn't want to leave the house again either. Glad your DS thought it was all fun and games.
  • That sounds completely awful!
  • OMG.  I would cry.

  • In the Baltimore/Washington area, I've heard about 10 hour commutes that night.  I didn't even think about people's kids at daycare.  How horrible.  I'm glad you're home!

  • I am not sure i would have survived that. I would have had to drink for several days to get over the anxiety of that adventure. Thank god everything worked out okay for you all!

  • That is awful!  But so great that the daycare made it all ok for your little guy.  We had a freak snowstorm where I live last year & I work about 40m from home.  I waited at work until 11pm & there was still so much gridlock I couldn't have made it home for hours.  Luckily a friend lives not too far from where I work & I got to her house for the night. Thank goodness DH could get to the kids as he works close to where they were.  On the same night, it took my bff TWELVE hours to go probably about 30-40m home- unfortunately with her two kids in the car.  It was a total nightmare!!
