Success after IF

NSAIFR: I hate that I am awkward:(

We just had a high ranking international representative visit our campus. I had to introduce him and I totally fumbled and looked stupid. Then I got all self-conscious and my anxiety got the best of me and I fumbled more.

I wish I was more graceful in my public speaking abilityEmbarrassed

  • It's totally normal.  Did you know that more people would prefer suicide over public speaking?  Isn't that crazy.  I was a public speaking major in college.  :-)  Practice makes perfect...your uncomfortableness is the norm.  No big deal...just remember that everyone who heard you fumble was relieved it wasn't them and totally felt for you...because it could've easily been them.

That actually makes me feel better, I never thought of it that way:)

  • I'm sorry! I'm sure it seemed worse to you than those around you. And, as trite as it sounds, it happens to everyone. I am one of the few who enjoy public speaking, but I have my moments, more in one-one-one situations where is put my foot in my mouth. I can't tell you how many times I've thought to myself, "Did you really say that?" or "Shut up, already!"

Its a crappy feeling. Snuggle your kids extra close when you get home. They don't care if you flubbed up!

  • I'm sorry.  I'm sure it was ok. My best friend was the chair of our college's Lecture Board and had the privilege of introducing Salman Rushdie... and called him Salmon Rushdie in front of everyone.

Looks like the two of us are in the minority with our interest in public speaking! It wasn't my major, but my last professional job was as a literacy trainer.

  • Unfortunately public speaking is one of those things most of us are intimidated by and few of us do often enough to make us more comfortable with it. I'm sure everyone there could empathize!
  • aww, i'm sure it wasn't nearly as bad as you think! our own self-consciousness makes things seem way worse than they are.

and know that you are NOT alone in sometimes feeling awkward! :P
