Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Probably an annoying question from 3-6

When did your LO start sitting unassisted?  Right now DD is in an 'I don't want to sit" stage.  She arches her back and slides down whenever I set her on the couch.  At least I hope it's a stage.  She used to love sitting on the couch...I don't see how we can "practice" sitting if she never wants to sit!  :)

TIA

  • She started sitting for a couple seconds at a time around 4.5 months. I believe in was around 5.5 months that she was sitting pretty good unassisted.

  • Hudson didn't sit unsupported until he was 7m old.  He still sometimes falls over too.

  • DD was the same way. she started sitting around 5mths shes 6mths now and is a pro LOL. she still has her moments where she would rather just lay on her back or tummy.

  • My 6 month old is not sitting unsupported yet.  This morning, for the very first time, she attempted to tripod.  I was all excited.  LOL.
  • I should clarify: I know it's still way early.  I'm not expecting her to do it right now - it's just weird that she loved being propped up before and now all of the sudden she's not having it.  She collapses into a puddle lol.

  • It was alittle after 6 months until she was sitting unassisted. It takes practice!! If you keep helping her she will learn. I started her off on the bed because it has more cushion and she"sank" on it and was about to learn better on that then the floor.

  • Could she want to be on her tummy or back to play and roll around?  Just a thought.
  • DD started unassisted around 6 months (still had to spot her because she would topple over a few times) and sat by herself for good around 7 months.

  • DD started to sit unassisted right after she turned 5 months. She'd fall over within a few seconds. 2 weeks later--at 5.5 months --she was doing great, and now she rarely falls.

I think this is kinda early though. 6 months is more the usual time frame.

To practice, try sitting on the floor and putting her in your lap or on the floor with you behind her as a backing. DD still loves to do that.

  • My DS didn't sit unassisted until he was 7 months old. He was crawling and pulling up at 6 months but had no interest in sitting until a month later.

She is def preferring her tummy and back these days.  She is also starting to really love the jumperoo.  Guess I was just trying to get an idea if anyone else's LO's ever suddenly rejected a position (like sitting) when they previously loved it.  She doesn't necessarily cry or anything - just shimmies down to her back!

  • Liam started sitting at 4 months.
    6-7 is average.
A lot of doctors say to not even be worried if they aren't sitting by 8, 9 months. It'll happen, she has tons of time!

This is what my boy did, almost exactly.  I can leave him sitting on the floor for a couple min and he usually doens't fall over.  But I still have pillows or thick blankets surrounding him so If he tips over he won't hit his head too hard.

  • DD has just recently started to sit unassisted. However, she does more of that "tripod" thing with her arms.
  • My LO is turning 6 months in the next week, and he does the same thing. Each time I try to get him to sit, he arches his back...that usually results in my holding him up to stand, and he seems to like that better for some reason. He used to love to sit with my support. I just think it is a phase.
