XP: ? about cervadil

For those with knowledge/experience, my OB told me that Cervadil gets inserted for 12 hours.  For that reason, I'm going into the hospital in the evening.  How should I expect to feel while on this?  Can I count on getting some sleep that night?

TIA

  • You'll feel crampy. They'll probably offer you pain meds and a sleeping pill. The bed will probably be uncomfortable though.

  • I was on pain meds but was able to sleep.

  • Cervadil didn't work for me. =/

They started me on it at 3pm, by 2am the next morning is when I started having contractions (and that's when I got pains meds), but I was not dilating. Ultimately, I had a c-section...but that was due to the baby not fitting through my pelvis.

    Good luck!

  • This is very rare but it actually put me into labor and I didn't need any pitocin.  My nurse said that it puts 15% of 2nd time moms into labor so I tried to convince my hubby to go home bc I assumed i would be sleeping fairly comfortable- wrong! I had the cervidil inserted at 6 pm and had my baby the next day at noon.  Good luck to you!!

  • I was told that first-time moms often need more than one dose of Cervadil to get things moving, but in my case, I had the Cervadil insert put in at around 11:30 a.m., and by 8:30-9:00 that same night, my contractions were regular at 4-5 minutes apart.  I had cramps in the early afternoon that progressed to true contractions by the evening.  DD was born at 1:41 p.m. the next day...

  • They inserted my Cervadil at 5 p.m., and my contractions started around 9 p.m. (I was 1 cm at the time).  From 11 p.m. - 3 a.m., I had minute-long contractions every two minutes, and by 3 a.m., I was at 4 cm and got my epidural.  They took the Cervadil out at this point.  I slept on and off from 3:30 a.m. until 6:30 a.m. when I hit 10 cm.  Between laboring down and pushing time, I had DD at 9:30 a.m. - no pit needed.

  • I did not feel crampy and actually felt nothing at all! I was able to sleep alright but I agree with the PPs that the beds are SUPER uncomfortable. I had one dose of cervadil at 6PM and they started pitocin the next morning around 8am. I started to push around 1:30PM and by 2:00PM DS was born. Good luck to you :)

  • I didn't notice any cramping or any pain after it was placed. They did give me a sleeping pill but that didnt really work because i was staying in the hospital and was kept on the monitors all night, so i didnt get much sleep. That's just my experiance it can affect everyone differently.

  • Mine fell out. It was not inserted well and the doc thought I was crazy when I said something right after insertion. Needless to say, they had to try something else. I ended up with 4 more doses of cervix softeners that didn't do anything. The pitocin also didn't get baby going. I had a c-section 41 hours after my water broke. I hope that your labor is less difficult (and long) than mine.

  • I was in early labor when I got it (4pm); by 9pm I was having painful contractions. They gave me Stadol through the night. 12 hours later, I was a big fat 0cm and 24 hours later...had a c-section

This is what happened to me on the first night.  The second night we did Cervidil again and I took an Ambien because I needed my sleep.  I wish I had taken the Ambien the first time around.

  • It hurt going in, but I didn't notice a thing once it was in. They gave me ambien to help me sleep.
  • I have two very different cervadil experiences.

With my first I went in Thursday night and cervadil was in by 7pm and it was painless/useless contractions every 5-6 minutes all night.  And i was awake all night despite a shot of morphine. I was too wired...it was my first! Dr came in at 6am and broke my water...at which point I was 1 cm. I had gotten my epi at about 9am and pitocin started at the same time, I was 3-4 cm and my contractions werent even that bad and my epi was perfect! DD1 was born at 3:22 pm...althought I did have 7 stiches and a second degree tear...recovery sucked.

With DD2 I went in Thursday night and the cevadil was in by 8pm. But this time it hurt soooo bad to get in there...I dont know if it was the nurse was unexperienced or that my cervix did NOT want to come out and play, but she tried probably close to six times...ugh, painful. And I passed up the morphine because it didnt help me sleep last time. I started feeling contractions about midnight...then they got worse and worse so I requested the morphine at about 2am and at about 3am I tried to get up to go to the restroom, but I couldnt move because the contractions were so painful, plus I was a little dizzy from the morphine...contractions continued to get worse so I was checked at 4am and was 4 cm...time for epi, but they had to get a stupid bag of IV fluid in me first so I was going through the contractions for about another hour and a half, and in that time I started to feel pressure and I told DH 'I think I need to push' and he said 'dont do that' lol. Finally got the epi at almost 6am... I kept asking 'when does the epidural start working?'  and the Dr came in to check me and said it's time to push and I said ' no, my epi hasnt kicked in yet, I'm too tired/scared' I felt like such a baby. but she said 'common time to go' and in four pushes she was out. no tear, instant relief. recovery was a breeze.

sorry for the novel. long story short first time cervadil didnt do squat. second time, it was all I needed to go into labor. ...hope this was helpful:)

  • Thanks for sharing, ladies.

In general, what is the order supposed to be?  Cervadil, break water, then Pitocin?  Or Cervadil, Pitocin, then break water?  My dr. told me but I have already forgotten.

  • As long as your body doesnt overreact you will be fine. Just crampy.

  • I actually just had that done Tuesday evening and I really didn't feel anything. I took an Ambien that night at the hospital and slept for about 4 hours and although it definitely thinned out my cervix A LOT, I just felt normal. I didn't start getting contractions until they gave me pitocin.

  • I had the Cervadil inserted at 10:00 pm and I took a sleeping pill, I did not wake up due to pain during the night. It was removed at 10:30 the next morning, at that time I was dilated to 1cm. I had him 3 hours later.
