Upset about thyroid levels - worried

I have had hypothyroidism since age 5 and have been on total replacement since age 9.  My blood work has been great until yesterday.  Today my endo called and said my TSH was 6 and he upped my meds.  He wants to retest in four weeks.  I cannot stop freaking out that the damage may have already been done.  I know I am probably over reacting but I cannot stop panicking.  Sorry, just had to get this out.

Re: Upset about thyroid levels - worried

  • I had thyroid cancer so am on total replacement.  At the beginning of my pregnancy my levels were SUPER low and they had to keep upping my dose.  It wasn't until 12wks along that they finally got the right level going for me.  My endo said not to worry about it too much.

  • How often do you get bloodwork done?

I was worried because my RE had upped my dosage when I got pregnant. Then when I went back 2 weeks later for my TSH bloodwork, he found out that he upped it too much and my TSH had sunk to .06. I asked my current endo about it and she said not to worry because odds are no damage was done. So now I re-test every 6-8 weeks during my pregnancy just to make sure my levels are okay.

I can understand why you would be worried, but I would speak with your endo about your concerns.

  • i had thyroiditis almost a year and a half ago that resulted in permant damage to my thryoid and i have been on replacement for a little over a year.  at first i was too low now i am too high.  my doctor is mostly concerned with me not gaining enough weight at this point.  i've been seeing my endo every 4 weeks especially since we can't get my meds right.  she wasn't concerned when i was too low she just upped my meds immediately.  i worry about this happening to my daughter someday since it runs in my family.

  • I know that I am just being paranoid.  I get my levels checked every 8 weeks if they are OK and 4 if they are not.  My endo is fantastic and is really on top of everything.  I know that the chance of anything being wrong is small.   It is just the first time this pregnancy that anything has shown up not normal.  I am just irritated since everything was going so well.

  • A TSH of 6 doesn't seem too overly bad, especially since you are being checked so often.  (Mine was 16 when I was first diagnosed.)  It was good through the 1st trimester which (in my mind) would be the most important part.  If your doctor wasn't overly concerned, I wouldn't be either!
