Babies: 0 - 3 Months

When do you start playing? What do you do?

LO will be 1 month on Monday (!!!!) - I feel as though we should start playing now? I am just kind of at a loss as to what to do, when to do it, etc.

I feel like right now, DD is so fussy. She has reflux and was just put on Zantac yesterday. We get practically no awake and content time with her. I am afraid if we play with her after a feeding, she will get over-stimulated and then overly tired.

Can anyone give me some guidance on this?

TIA!

  • We do tummy time to play. At first I had to put her on the boppy but she likes the floor now too and can roll over. Just get on the floor with her or read her a book.

  • Sometimes our play time is just him sitting in my lap, and I talk or sing to him, and make faces at him. He's still not a big fan of tummy time but if he's in a good mood we can get a couple minutes out of him on the activity mat. He likes to look at himself in the mirror which helps hold off the crying for a little bit. My son also likes to be naked (or at least stripped down to a diaper) so in the mornings we do a little naked time on the bed.

  • DH loves to walk around the house with LO explaining things to him.  He brings him in the laundry room and explains how to do laundry or in his room and shows him all his stuff.  Just talking and interacting with LO goes a long way.  We also read a lot of books.  I would put DS in his play gym at 4 weeks but he would just stare.  Now he smiles at his "friends" and knocks them around with his fists.

  • other than reading to her, we use toys that are bright or interesting and move them around her head and face and have her track them. she gets excited and starts kicking her feet.

we also stick our tongue out at her with close face to face time or do exaggerated blinking or opening our mouths. she started imitating sticking out her tongue last week.

she likes when we sing songs too, and often i'll make them up about her face and touch different parts while i sing, and she seems to like it.

I coo at her a lot too and she likes the sounds, and purses her lips like she is going to make a sound too (she doesn't yet).

also it's not really playing maybe but we place her on a warm towel an use unscented baby oil and give her a massage, she really likes it.

that's the extent of our "play" right now, it doesn't last long but she definitely likes it and feels stimulated.

  • Sometimes just walking around the house and talking, singing or dancing is fun!  I love to just sing to him and he gets a big smile and coos back.

  • I play with his little feet - pat them together, touch his toes, count his toes & fingers.... I read books to him.  I point out parts of his face in a sing-song fashion ( 2 eyes, 1 mouth, 1 nose.)

Like others said, we make exaggerated faces at him.

We just bought a play gym, and have used it 2-3x.  He lies there kicking his legs & staring.  A couple of times he's hit one of the dangling animals.

He doesn't have a whole lot of quiet-alert time, so I try at least to read to him during that time.

  • Now I feel bad that I'm not really playing with DD. I mean, I talk to her, but she's not really all that happy when she's awake most of the time. We're dealing with a colicky baby here... But it's getting better.

She likes to be in her swing or i'll stand there with her for a few minutes after changing her. SHe loves laying on her changing mat to stare at the ceiling fan in her room. But I haven't really tried the playmat yet. Should I be doing more?

  • Thanks so much for posting this!  I was just going to ask the same thing.  Seems like all DS does during the day is eat, fuss and fight sleep.  I try mat/tummy time and he gets so mad!  I took him for a walk in the stroller outside yesterday since the weather here is nice.  That kept him happy for about 15 mins.
