Re: congested baby boy!!

  • My daughter had some boogs blocking her up, and at her 2 week appt my dr showed us how to get them out with the saline drops.

Basically, she layed baby on her back, put a drop or so in each nostril, which made baby very angry(and that is actually good, it helps her expel the boogers) and then she would just light push one nostril closed (and then do the other nostril, keep lightly pushing each side closed one at a time) and see if she blew a boog out of the other side, which she did! a HUGE ONE! I was amazed, and it helped her so much, she slept a lot better.

I did try it a few times myself at home, and sometimes it works on getting them out, sometimes it doesn't, and it is hard to get her so upset! But if the boogers dont come right out, I just give up that time, and usually by the next time they come out easy. The saline drops themselves help either way!

    Good luck!

  • When you take a hot shower, take your baby in the bathroom (not the shower) with you.  The steam will help clear his nose.

  • I have the same problem with my son, I bought simply baby saline and spray it up his nose once or twice and then he sneezes and then I use the suction to get out boogers
  • highly recommend nosefrida. it sounds weird but works amazingly well and you dont shove anything up his nose. always works for me and my son has some boulders in his nose. you won't be sorry.

Another vote for this. It works wonders.

  • I have used the saline drops and a bulb syringe. I would put a few drops on one side and then wait for a few seconds to give it time to loosen everything up. Insert the bulb syringe into the same side you put the drops in, aimming the tip of the bulb syringe towards the bridge of the nose. You'll insert the bulb syringe far enough into the nose so it is completely block off air entering into that side. Place your finger over the other side and then release the bulb syringe allowing it to suction everything out. Repeat on the same side until you believe you have everything out (for now). Then do the same thing on the other side. I was told I could clean out his nose as often as I needed so I would clean out his noise before every diaper change. I was also told his nose might bleed a little. If it happens to take a deep breath and then try again later.

It took me a few times before I got the hang of it but once you feel comfortable with it, it's a breeze. Then you and baby feel much better.

THIS THIS THIS! I'm so glad I got one!

  • Thanks for the saline tips - I was trying to figure out what to do the other night!

When DS was congested, I turned his humidifier up and took it out into the living room with us.  After about 30 minutes of running on full steam, he sneezed and the biggest booger ever came out - I swear it was bigger than his poor little nose!  He was so much happier - me, on the other hand... well, let's just say I am still trying to get my hair straight again!

  • DD2 has RSV...but about a week ortwo ago it started with congestion.  If you see any sign that your LO is having trouble breathing beyond simple congestion take him to the Dr again right away and ask specifically for the RSV test...scary, but I'm so glad I know what it is now.

ALSO, instead of using saline try breastmilk (if you're nursing) DD doesnt mind it as much as saline :)

Good luck I hope your LO feels better soon.

  • Nosefrida!  And baby Vicks rub, cool mist humidifier, and saline or breastmilk in the nose to loosen things up before suctioning.
  • our house is very dry plus the weather here doesn't help so we use a humidifier and also the saline drops work and we bout a nasal aspirator by Graco it works wonders and ds likes its much better than the bulb... plus it plays music and distracts him which is great and sucks them right out especially with the saline to loosen everything up it's only $20 and deff worth it
  • Had the same problem with DS from the time he was a week old til he was about 6 weeks.  We did the saline drops and we ended up buying an electric nasal aspirator from Target.  Aside from the humidifier (make sure its cold mist) we were told to have him sleep at an incline otherwise it doesn't drain when they are that little.  They suggested either having him sleep in his car seat or to put a book under his mattress in his crib.  I ended up buying the fisher price newborn sleeper and rocker when we went out of town at three weeks and that thing was a life saver esp for the congestion. Hope that helps!
