HELP! with refusing bottles

I work mornings, so at least three days a week, DS has to take at least one bottle while I'm gone. Otherwise, he's going 6:30-11:30 without fluid (he'll eat a meal of solids). I EBF so it's pumped BM - usually he takes about 4 ounces.

He's cutting teeth right now, so that may be part of the problem, but his love of the bottle (ok, he never really liked it to begin with) has been slowly deteriorating for a while anyway. DH has tried different slow nipples, cup feeding, and a sippy, and DS is refusing all of them.

Anyone have any ideas of how we could get him to take some BM while I'm gone? Should we try a cup with a straw? DH says he just chews on the nipple, so I'm afraid he'll just chew on the straw as well. Maybe we should try a different kind of nipple? We've been using the plain Medela bottles. Help! We're at a loss here and really getting concerned.

Re: HELP! with refusing bottles

  • The same thing happened to us a couple of weeks ago. We were using the Playtex Ventaire bottles at DC, which have kind of a hard nipple and she would only eat a little bit. I had some Born Free bottles at home and she would GUZZLE down the formula, so I finally figured out that those nipples were too hard for her and she was teething. The Born Free bottles have a really soft nipple, you can try those. If that doesn't work, try a sippy cup. I say go with whatever works!

  • My DD is doing this too! The only way day care can get her to drink from a bottle is if she is sitting in a bouncer and someone sits next to her. It is a very slow process!!

Yeah, maybe the nips are too hard. I'll try the Born Free ones and see if those work. Thanks!
