PSA-breathing treatments-Xopenex

Hi ladies!  I'll be joining you on this board soon, but I wanted to share this!

I know a lot of Dr's prescribe Xopenex for nebulizer treaments for our LO's.
It's EXPENSIVE!  Well my doctor told me about a "Savings Program" that Xopenex has started.  You have to have insurance, it won't work for Medicade, Medicare, etc.

Basically you get a "membership card" and they will pay up to $50 of your co-pay for your refills.  Best part- you can use it 12 times!!!

Go to https://www.xopenex.com and sign up for their "breath for Less" Savings Program.  They will let you print a temporary card, and will mail you an actual card.

  • I just wanted to tell all you ladies just like the xopenex alot of Rx drugs offer coupons on their websites . If you are taking Rx I would look up and is if the drug company is offering any coupons . I know that nuvaring has a $15 coupon you can use toward your copay and you can print and use up to 6 coupons . If there are any nuvaring moms on here .

  • Ask your doctors if albuterol would be an option.  It works the same way and is a lot cheaper b/c its generic.  I asked my doctor after finding out xopenex has a $50 copay and she didn't think there was a difference b/t the two drugs.

  • From what I was told by the pharmacist- generic albuterol is different.  That's the problem with Xopenex, its technically the ONLY drug on the market with its "composition".  It is albuterol, but it has more than just that in it.

  • A lot of the reason the prescirbe Xopenex for babies is that one of the sides effects of Albuterol is increased heart rate.  Although it doesn't happen with everyone who takes it.

I am a respiratory therapist and we don't readily carry Xopenex at our hospital, since we try and give Albuterol first, but we do have some patients that come in and say they can't take Albuterol because it makes them jittery or increases their heart rate.

They have done several studies on the difference between the two drugs and really their isn't much difference between the two.
