Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Help! my 6 month old WILL NOT eat cereal.

She watches our food like a hawk...very interested in it. when I try to feed her cereal, she spits it right out. I have tried at all different times of the day. she just won't have it! (different types of cereal too---rice, oatmeal, etc).  she drinks her bottle like a champ though.  (haven't tried any purees yet)

Has anyone else had a baby like this. My big girl was so the opposite-once she was given food she never looked back!

  • I'd try to introduce a fruit puree and mix it in with that.  My son absolutely will not take it by itself, but if I mix in even just a little bit of a mashed banana to give it some flavor he gobbles it down.

  • Cereal is pretty bland.  There's no reason you can't try a puree and see if she likes something with more flavor better.

  • My DD did the exact same thing. It was like we were trying to feed ehr poison! We didn't force the issue, but we did the same routine every night to get her used to it. She never did end up liking the cereal, our pediatrician recommended we move onto veggies. It took her a while to get used eating solids but she is a champ at it now! Just give it some time. They get all they need from their milk so just take your time with it. Good luck!
  • DD was exactly the same way.  We gave up on cereal and moved on to veggies (sweet potatoes first)  DD loves her fruits and veggies.  I still occasionally mix in a little oatmeal, but not often.  We are using quinoa mixed in with veggies and she loves that.  I cook the quinoa and then puree it. It has so much more nutrients than rice or oatmeal cereal, and doesn't present any allergy risks because it's not wheat.

  • Skip it or mix it with puree if you need the iron.

I wish we skipped it, Rice cereal constipated DD and kind of set us on a whole weird eating course that I wasn't happy with.

  • Don't worry about it. They don't have to have cereal. Like PP said, try fruit or a puree.
  • DD was the same way. We eventually just started with baby food, and she's recently started eating that. I think for the most part, she just wasn't ready for solids when we started trying to feed her cereal.

This. We went through the same thing with Max last week until we did a spoonful of cereal, a spoonful of pureed sweet potatoes, and repeat. Good luck!

  • We had the exact same scenario.  DS1 ate whatever he could get his hands on.  DS2 not really interested in chowing down at all.  Give it time.  Keep offering.

Pedi told us to mix with a little apple juice.  It didn't help at the time.  BUT now (almost 9 mo) LO is actually getting interested in eating the food we offer.  He still only eats a little (DS1 was eating entire jars of baby food several times a day at this point) but he is coming around on his own time.

  • Its more expensive but we use the gerber baby food mixed cereal with some sort of fruit. Its the only thing DD will eat.
  • Skip it chica! Anneliese hated rice cereal too, so we went straight to bananas instead. She gets a combo of purees and small bites of our food now.

  • We had a similar issue with DS.  Even when I mixed it with fruits or veggies.  But he was totally showing interest in wanting to eat!  When I mentioned it to the pedi she suggested we offer food before any bottle.  She also said that a baby his age only needed between 10-20oz of formula a day.  I thought she was crazy! How could he only need 2 bottles a day?!  But would you believe he now eats like a champ- stage 2 foods with meats, has his 16 oz a day of formula and is sleeping thru the night!  It's amazing to me!  I guess she was right!

I'd try giving cereal before a bottle in the morning and see how she does with it.

    This.

Cereal is not even necessary, skip it.

  • Try a puree instead.  If LO is tongue thrusting it out you might want to get a referral to speech therapist (we had to get one at DD#2's 6 mo checkup) to get LO evaluated.  GL  and I swear second kiddos like to be a handful lol
