Waterbirth mamas?

Talk to me about it!

DH and I both talked about taking the waterbirth class at our hospital before ds was born, but the timing wasn't right or something and we never took it.  I knew I would feel relaxed in the water, but by the time I got to the hospital and was 6 cm dilated and the contractions were every 3 minutes apart... well, I wasn't relaxed in the water!  I got in the tub in the l+d room, couldn't get comfy and got out after about 30 minutes.

When I had dd (13 years ago), I spent 3 or 4 hours in the tub at the hospital and it was great.  I don't what was so different with ds except that labor came on fast and strong.

ANYWAY... long story short - I'm hoping to not be caught so off guard by going into labor this time around and starting to think about making a birth plan of sorts.  Very curious about stories/input about waterbirths and laboring in the water (how to be comfy in a tub?)

Pros/cons/things to consider?  Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Waterbirth mamas?

  • I delivered #2 in the water.  I think I got in around the time transition started (it was a super fast l&d - 4 hrs total) and reclined back with my arms floating.  When I got closer to trying to push, my doula recommended I try leaning forward over the edge of the pool.  That hurt my back, so I wound up on all 4's in the tub.  The only thing I didn't like about that was that the water was just a little too high and my face would sometimes dip into the water.  Overall, though, I much preferred that to the squat bar at the hospital.

  • My goal with DD was to birth in the tub...but that didn't happen because of the transfer.  But I did labor there for a few hours & loved it.  I'm definitely planning to rent a birth tub this time around.

I really think it's a personal preference thing. I know of women who rent the tub, labor in it, but want to get out for the birth.

  • I had a waterbirth plan....I did labor in the water but kept getting hot and I got in and out for a while, I was very relaxed and calm in the tub. I also got out in the end to birth, but my daughter was almost a shoulder dystocia.....

I also agree about renting a tub depending on your circumstances. We birthed at home and had a large tub so we didn't need one but if we had it would have been free. GL!
