Running while pregnant- ? regarding pace

Hey ladies, I know that my pace is going to slow naturally as I progress.  I'm 8 weeks along and can't tell if my pace slow down is because I've slacked off with running or because of the pregnancy.  Granted, I've slacked off in the running department because I've been so exhausted, but I've managed to get at least one run in every week (down from 4-5 pre-preg).  I know everyone's different, but when did you all start seeing a slow down in your pace?

Re: Running while pregnant- ? regarding pace

  • I purposely slowed my pace down a bit after running a 1/2 marathon PR at 7 weeks, only by ~0.1-0.2 mi/hr(I usu run on a treadmill).   I'm trying to go by RPE(rate of perceived exertion) such that I could still converse while running.  I still am running 3 times a week for usu 3-4 miles.  I've noticed my pace has naturally slowed now such that I don't think I could run .5-1mi/hr faster even if I wanted to.  Some days I feel better and do up the tempo but still not where I was at 7 weeks.   I consider it interval training now!:)  I hope to keep it up into 3rd tri but taking it week by week.  HTH!

  • Towards the end of my first trimester, I started to purposely slow down.  Nearing the end of my 2nd trimester, I'm only doing interval running (run 4 minutes, walk 2) and I'm still at my first trimester pace.  However, I feel that I will be decreasing my pace soon--I feel my body working hard, my blood pumping, ect...I need to take it down a notch.  I see myself running for another 7 weeks or so, then I don't think I can do anymore.

I'd recommend continuing running but really, really listen to your body.  If you're really working at a certain pace, take that as a sign to decrease your pace.

    Good luck!

  • My pace naturally slowed down right away.  I have also noticed another dramatic decrease in my pace the last 2 weeks or so.

It's a very humbling experience.  I just want to push myself harder and try and run faster, but at the same time my body is telling me No.

  • I noticed a difference almost immediately. My breathing was my main problem, I just couldn't catch my breath.

  • I didn't really notice when it happened last time around. I definitely didn't do the same speed work or hill drills as I did before I was pregnant and I took it really easy for my full marathon at 25 weeks (more than an hour slower than my normal pace). I think it just happened gradually.

  • First of all, it's awesome that you're able to run at all during the first tri!  I just didn't feel up to doing anything except for sleeping and eating bagels with cream cheese!  I started running again once I hit 14 weeks, but at a deliberately slower pace than what I was running before (went from a 9 minute mile to a 10 minute mile).  I was able to maintain that pace until 26 weeks when I had to slow to a 11 minute mile.  I do 3 miles at a time, 3 days a week like I always have done....it just takes me longer.  I have to build up my speed slowly but I'm still comfortable running.  Just listen to your body, drink sips of water during the run, and don't push yourself too hard.
  • Thanks ladies!
