Got my membranes stripped..

I've heard mixed reviews on whether I should expect any speedy results from this procedure, but I have my fingers crossed!

Any 2+ moms with experience? What has everyone else heard?

Re: Got my membranes stripped..

  • How many cm where you before you got your membranes stripped? I will get mine stripped next Thursday if I don't have my LO by then. I'm already 3cm though so I don't think I would make it very long after Thursday.I've heard one person it was 24-48 hours and then someone else it was 5 days.

I HAD MINE STRIPPED YESTERDAY. ALTHOUGH IT WAS QUICK 10SEC TOPS, IT HURT! LOTS OF PRESSURE AND MOVEMENT. BUT TODAY I LOST MY MUCUS PLUG AND HAVE HAD CONSISTANT CRAMPS ALL DAY...SO I THINK ITS WORKING =)

Definitely a lot of pressure, it didn't feel good or anything.. but it wasn't painful in the way that when he was done, it still hurt. I felt fine afterwards, and it really didn't take long.

  • so what exactly do they do when they strip your membranes? I am almost at my wits end. I am sooo uncomfortable ( I know.. who of use still on here is comfy?) but I just really can't do this anymore and I am so glad that MH and I decided that we are done having kids after this. There is no way in hell I am going through this again!!!

so what exactly do they do when they strip your membranes?

"What your doctor is talking about is essentially just an aggressive pelvic exam in which he will feel around just inside your cervix where the membranes ("bag of water") are attached to its rim. By running an examining finger around the inside of your cervix, he can separate the amniotic sac from where it's stuck there."

How my doctor explained it to me is they go in and separate your water from your cervix. Your water sits right on top of your cervix and kind of sticks to it so they just go in with a finger and in a sweeping motion separate your water. They say it may or may not work.

  • I had mine done on Tuesday. I was 1.5cm dilated and 50% effaced...it didn't hurt and was very fast. I had a little spotting and the baby moved around ALL DAY LONG! I had 1 or 2 contractions (my first one's) and thats it:( I have been losing bits of mucus plug now but no sign of baby. I had a neighbor have hers done last week and she had the baby the next day:) I am mainly just hoping that it helps me progress a little since I'm getting induced on Tuesday.

Gotcha...Heck, why pay for an appt. I just have MH go fishing in there. I was 1cm this past Tues and I have def been having alot more contractions though nothing is constisti still. And now DD is kicking my bladder so hard that it makes me double over in pain or jump out of my seat if I'm sitting.

This time is soo much harder.

  • It turns out yesterday when I was in and my midwife was checking me, she DID strip my membranes. It didn't hurt me at all, didn't realize she did it. It felt just like getting your dilation checked IMO, because that's all I thought she did! She had pity on me for having contractions the past few weeks, and she also said she stretched my cervix a half cm. (I called today to ask something and she asked how my contractions were doing after she stripped me.)

Well, for me so far, I've had a few hardcore contractions but not all of them were like that. I thought it was just because she was a bit rough checking me, but I realize now they're probably down to having my membranes stripped. She said it was basically like using her fingers to do donuts on my cervix.

  • My OB mentioned stripping my membranes this upcoming Monday. Not sure why she mentioned doing it so early. Thinking of the fact that if it helps move along these contraction and that I will have a LO soon scares me crap out of me though, lol. Although, I should add that I am not sure I am actually going to have her do it.

ETA: I think my OB may have accidentally stripped me a little bit last internal though since I had a huge chunk of something come out afterward though...I am going to ask her about it on Monday.

  • I had mine stripped with my second son at 10:00 A.M., started going into labor at 10:00 P.M. that same day and had him at 4:00 A.M. He was really low and I had been sitting at 2-3 cm for weeks. I never had mine stripped with my first. I wasn't dilated enough and the baby wasn't low enough for the doctor to feel it would actually be effective.
  • I was stripped Wed and I was at 4cm...My dr assured me that she would see me the next day for delivery.  But it didn't happen!
