Success after IF

Organizing by color concerns? Autism concerns?

DS just started organizing wooden letters by color.  I know ive read that color organizing is a high functioning autistic characteristic.  I'm not extremely worried but wondering if that is normal. He also lines stuff up.  He is pretty social and does have a lot of words.  The color organizing just started yesterday that I noticed.

  • Katie lines up her little people and animals and loves to sort by color.  We called early intervention for a number of reasons and she qualified for therapy but they did say she wasnt' autistic so in our case it was normal.  You can always talk to you pedi.

  • DS has been sorting by color since the summer.  He doesnt really start doing it on his own though, I usually initiate it - I dont know if that makes a difference.

He does need to have things just so and organized/lined up.  I usually blame that on DH since he has some OCD tendencies.

When we had Brady tested by EI, they tested him to make sure he COULD do those things. He was tested around age 2, and they said that was something they should be doing at the age of 2. I wouldnt worry at all, it is a normal milestone. (And he didnt qualify for services)

  • Thanks mrandmrsS
  • I am pretty sure that is basic development. I dont think it is anything to be concerned about

  • most kids like sorting things... and lining up toys.

a majority of "signs of ASD" are things normal children do - it's only when you see many signs in the same child that there is a concern.

  • My son has always lined up all his trucks and cars.  Every time I walk into daycare one kid or another is lining them up or sorting things by color!

  • Isabel does it but she also has a little list of other things going on so it's not our only reason for concern. Her evaluation with the developmental pedi is not unitl March. Having said that, my niece who has crazy good language skills and is on track or ahead in every area also lines up and organizes by color.

I thinks it is pretty common:)

  • Totally normal. It is how he is learning different things. I have one that lines up, stacks and sorts all the time and she gets really upset if you disturb her when she is playing like this. She can focus really long on a particular task or playing. It is how she learns.

Her twin rarely does this, she learns by reading books, that child will look at books all day long, over and over and over again, so she learns about colors and objects through looking at them in books. She is also the kind of kid that will only stay on task for like 10 seconds, then she is off to the next toy or book.
