Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Giving a 6 week old baby food!

A friend of mine had a baby almost 7 weeks ago. She made a comment about how he has all these tummy troubles. I asked if he was breast or bottle fed and she said she does both, in addition to giving him rice cereal, carrots and apples. What?? She said her pedi told her it was OK since her baby is "hungry all the time".  I hate it when people tell me how to raise my child so I feel like it's not my place to say anything but I feel so bad for her baby. He cries all the time, has major gas and poop troubles. Have you ever heard of a pediatrician advising someone to feed their child baby food at 6 weeks old? I've heard of rice cereal for reflux but she never mentioned him having trouble with reflux. Should I say something or leave it alone?

  • Definitely say something! I'm usually one for keeping out of other people's business but that is a big no-no. Just be nice about it.

  • I would bring it up. Even if you try to mention it a non-confrontational way... Like "I asked my pedi about giving my LO food" or "I researched it after you mentioned it" etc. GL.

  • I would say something.  Maybe you can call your pedi and ask when you can give baby food.  Then when you talk to her say you asked your pedi about when to let LO eat food and he said not until 4-6 months.

I would listen to my dr over my friend but dr to dr would hold more weight.

  • I had a similar situation with a friend of mine. She's getting reasy to feed her LO solids and he's barely 3 months old. I'd definately say something to her though, I don't think babies that young can properly digest solids, I mean if there are reflux issues thats different. I talked to my pedi today and he told me that I didn't even need to consider cereal yet, and that I could wait until 6 months if I wanted to...

  • When we were discussing it I said "Really? Avery's pediatrician said not to introduce solids until 6 months" Her response was "I know, I thought that too but the pedi said it was totally fine!" Honestly sounds like a load of crap to me but I don't know. I'm well aware that it's none of my business but I just can't help but feel bad for the little baby and I know all that food is what's causing his tummy problems.

  • My cousin's wife is doing the same thing... I do NOT think it's okay. Her DS was about 10 weeks when she started. She said her doc said it was okay because he's always hungry. He eats and eats (formula) and is never satisfied. He doesn't have any tummy issues, he's actually a very happy mellow baby, but I still don't think it's right. He's SUMO baby, too. Well okay, he's not THAT big, but he's def a little chunk. Oh, people.
