1st Trimester

Is Proactive safe in the first trimester?

With DD I had horrible acne during the first trimester... at about 12 weeks my doctor gave me some kind of low dose acne cream.... I have a new doctor (since I was 18 weeks with DD) and I can see my acne coming back. He really didnt want to give  me anything during the first trimester but said to get some proactive.

Anyone else's doctor suggest proactive?

Re: Is Proactive safe in the first trimester?

  • No. My doctor said soap and water. As I understand it, none if it is really good, but I can be wrong. I'm actually shocked your doctor told you to use it though.

If you want to try something natural there is a store called LUSH that has all natural products. If you don't have one near you you can order on-line. I love their stuff and it makes me feel safe while pregnant. Maybe it is as effective as I would love it to be, but the safety is worth it to me.

  • I think doctors all have widely different opinions.

With DS I asked my doctor and she gave me a funny look and said "as long as you aren't planning on eating it...".

I used it throughout my first pregnancy. No issues.

  • I actually brought a bottle of my proactiv to my first appointment at 8 weeks and asked my doctor if she thought I should continue using it.  She said that I shouldn't so I have switched to Cetaphil which seems to be working.  I am sure going to miss my proactiv though.  It is amazing.
  • My Dr. said it was fine.

I've just been using Cetaphil and benzoil peroxide cream. It has helped a lot.

    Stay away from salicylic acid.

  • My doc was okay with my prescription topical treaments - benzyl peroxide wash (8%), clindamycin lotion, and Epiduo gel.
  • Opinions vary.

I did a lot of research on it and the most common opinion seems to be that the face wash is ok since you wash it out, but to avoid the lotion since it is staying on.

But really, its a tough one because everyone has different opitions.
