Wedding dress/ christening gown??

Ok so i know im never going to wear my wedding dress again, and my mom and best friend insist that i turn it into a christening gown.. and while this sounds great i dont know if i can part with it.. i drove all the way to Kleinfelds in NY to get my gown and then i paid way too much for it.. but on the other hand it will be extremely special that my daughter will get to wear a peice of my wedding dress.. it think the hardest part will be seeing it in shreds but on the other side i will have something beautiful for my daughter.... i need some advice is anyone else thinking of turning their wedding dress into a christening or any other type of clothing for their baby????

Re: Wedding dress/ christening gown??

  • I thought about doing this with mine...but I'm not sure it would work with my dress. It was a satin dress, so it just may not be the right type of material.

  • I'm going to do it with pieces from my dress and my late mom's dress.  I want her to get to be there in some way.
  • I was thinking about that, but I have no idea where to begin or what part of my dress would really be good for the christening gown that would have a part of my dress detail other than just a blank canvas of white.

  • I've thought about it. Not sure yet. I got my dress at Kleinfeld too!

  • One of DHs aunt did this and it was so special!  Well, Christening suits for her little boys I guess I should say.  I immediately fell in love with the idea and would like to do this, but I think I can only do so if I have a girl.  It has LOTS of silver lace which wouldn't really work for a little boys Christening Suit.

I agree that the hardest part in making the decision is wondering if I could actually bear to part with the dress to be "destroyed"  I'm reminding myself though that it's not being destroyed - it's being made in to something for future generations to use.  If I have a daughter she could wear it and any girls from there after could use it too (as long as it's kept up nicely)

I am!  My dress had a pick-up skirt and after we had it cleaned, the seamstress let all the pick-ups out and detached it from the bodice so it's one flat piece of fabric.  I haven't gotten to the next step yet, but I can't wait!

  • I would rather keep it on the off chance a daughter or granddaughter would want to wear it someday for her wedding. My best friend wore her mom's dress (made a few changes to make it stylish) and it was really special to both of them.
  • I am planning to do that with mine.  I have a client of mine that is going to make a dress and a pant suit.  I'm not sure if my dress has enough usable fabric, but if not, it will still be part of both outfits.

I was having a hard time deciding to part with my dress too, but I would hate for it to just sit in the attic or basement getting ruined when I could make it into something my kids can wear and then pass down through the family.

  • I hadn't thought about anything like that, just maybe that she could possibly wear it for her wedding. But poor girl would have to be really short to pull that off Wink My mom made me a Halloween costume out of her wedding dress one year - I went as a bride, surprise, surprise!

  • i think what im going to end up doing is having my best friend "kidnap" my dress and take to have it done i dont think i will have the strengh to do it myself... lol.. i know it is a special gift i can give my daughter and makes perfect sense.. and to be honest i dont think my daughter will want to wear it i didnt even think about wearing my moms dress styles change so much over the years..i was a bigger girl for the wedding so i have plenty of fabric and a ton of beading!
  • I think I'll wait to see if LO is a boy or a girl.  If LO is a girl I'll be using the christening gown my mom and aunts and uncles were baptized in and leave my gown for her to possibly use on her wedding day.  The christening gown is made from my Nana's wedding gown and it holds a lot of meaning to me given the tradition.  If LO is a boy I still don't know if I'll have the heart to re-use my dress in this way or if I can even ask my sister (the godmother) to spend the money to have the christening gown made.  The tradition in our family (if not using Nana's gown) is for the godmother to buy the christening gown.

  • My grandmother recently made her best friend's dress into ringbearer pillows for her granddaughter's weddings. I'm thinking maybe I'll save it for my children's weddings...and make pillows?? I don't know...a christening outfit would be nice too!

  • i got my dress 2nd hand and i had the tailor cut the train off. she told me to save it and use that for the baby's baptism dress/outfit. I think I am going to do it because what else am i going to do with all that fabric?! Of course I don't plan to keep the rest of my dress, i'm not that type of person. since you paid so much it might be nice to use it again either now or save it and see if your daughter wants to wear it when she gets married someday, good luck Smile
  • What a cool idea. I only ever heard of ppl using the wedding dresses on the bassinet for their babies. It looks amazing that way too.

  • I've thought a little about it but I'm not sure I could part with my dress either. I didn't wear a veil but if you did maybe you could use the tulle or veil material in the dress...as a little overlay on the skirt or something. That way you preserve the dress but still have part of your wedding there!

  • I don't know if my dress will work for a christening gown, but I was think of maybe using it for that. At the end, I decided to leave it for my daughter for when she gets married (I pray to God I get to see her if she gets married). I am not expecting her to wear it as is (although it's gorgeous that way). She can converted how ever she wants to. I mean, why would I just keep it there. If my daughter doesn't want it, then it will turn into a christening gown for my grandchildren. Well, one can only dream.

  • I'm considering this for our son.  Cost is the biggest worry, and I guess it would be hard to hand my dress over.  But we are having one and only one child.  He isn't going to want to wear my wedding dress lol, and saving it for the rather small chance I have a granddaughter one day seems silly when I could do something special with it right now.  I know I like the idea more than picking one up at Sears or wherever.  Going to keep thinking about it...

This is the same for me; I'd love to do it but I don't think the fabric of my dress would work.

  • I am planning on doing this as well, if it's a girl. I didn't spend a lot on my dress though, I was one of those nut jobs that did 'the running of the brides' at Filenes Basement in NYC! I scored a $3000 dress for $249!!! I almost paid more to have it altered!! :)

  • I'm planning on making a Baptism gown out of my dress if we have a girl. I don't like the dresses I saw online, so I think this would be a nice way to use my dress.

Or maybe someone can make a small baby blanket and pillow out of the dress for the baby? I don't know. I'd like to use it for something instead of it just sitting in a closet.

  • My mother-in-law made her wedding dress into a christening gown for my sister-in-law's daughter.  It was beautiful.  Does your mom have a dress that you can use, that way you can save your dress for your daughter or your own grand-daughter's christening gown.
