Unexplained rash

Hey all,

My little E is covered with a rash that looks like mosquito bites, so we saw the pedi but she wasn't sure what is causing it :(  They're everywhere but his face and itchy.  He was just finishing a 10 day antibiotic treatment for an ear infection, but pedi doubts the meds caused it since he was fine the first 8 days on it.  Sooo, she suspects a virus, food reaction, or reaction to laundry soap.  Laundry soap seemed the most likely based on the look of the rash - I may have used a different non-unscented brand on his clothes recently, but it seems hard to believe that could cause something so dramatic, esp. when his stuff has been washed in scented soaps before without this issue (though not this brand). He hasn't eaten anything new lately, but maybe a new reaction has developed?  I guess we are in wait and see mode for now... has anyone experienced something like this?

Re: Unexplained rash

  • Interesting the pedi poo-pooed it being the antibiotics.  Sounds like what I get from ampicillin/amoxocillin and I didn't get the response until almost the end of the course of antibiotic treatment.  Allergies don't usually show up with the 1st exposure to the allergen.  You've got to be sensitized to it.

Interesting! She did suggest we do a blood test for the penicillin allergy once the reaction is gone, but she seemed pretty doubtful it was the cause. DH is allergic to penicillin, but we don't know what kind of reaction he had as his mom's memory is poor. I will definitely have the test done when we're there for his 2.5 yr check up next week.
  • I felt so stupid the 1st time when I didn't stop the antibiotics right away when the rash popped up but I thought, I've been taking it 10 days already, I'm sure that's not the problem!  But low and behold it was!
  • I am with mrs Boomboom about it might still being the meds. When we suspected Riley's rash was a penicillin allergy the rash didn't apper till day 8.
  • I sent you an email. Most likely the  medicine.
