Success after IF

XP from PAIF: At what point do you take meds for nausea?

So, my REs office gave me a choice....his NP said if it really becomes unmanageable, they'll prescribe something for it.

The thing is, I'm not so unfortunate ones who pukes a lot. In fact, I've never, but on one occasion I was heaving for 15 minutes after taking my meds. My gag reflex is in overdrive.

My appetite is poor, I have so many food aversions, I can eat only a little at a time and then I'm full, so I'm hungry/nauseous again soon. If I eat the wrong thing, I'm sick for hours. Having to graze all day isn't too convenient at work and restaurants/dinners at friends homes are out of the question. I can't even look at food for any length of time and haven't cooked for weeks. Add in the fatigue and I'm one lazy, unmotivated slug.

So....at what point does this go from normal to needing help? I don't know if I'm a candidate for meds, or if I should just suck it up.

Re: XP from PAIF: At what point do you take meds for nausea?

  • I would wait until you get out of the first trimester and see if it goes away on its own.  For most women, it does.  If it doesn't then I would consider meds.

I know you don't want to hear this, but for me, no meds eliminated the issues you are describing.  They did help me keep from puking more than 3 or so times a day.  But all the food aversions and the like, they stayed the same.

I really think at this point you will need to suck it up and learn how to graze all day.  If you go to a restaurant, order whatever sounds tolerable and have the rest packed to go and eat it later.  If you go to a friends home for dinner just explain you can't eat like you normally do and bring your own food if need be.

  • It might get a lot better once you're out of the 1st tri if you can hang on that long. I know Smilee had TERRIBLE m/s throughout her whole pregnancy.  There are lots of girls who go on Zofran to manage the nausea.

I would say wait until you're out of the 1st tri and then get prescribed something.  If it's interfering with your life then you need to do something.

  • The meds helped limit my vomiting to a few times a day but I still had the nausea and food aversions - I dont think it will help with that.

I tried 3 meds with DS and ended up losing about 12lbs because it took so long to get it under control.  The first one we tried this time "worked" so we stuck with it.  Otherwise I was vomiting multiple times an hour and not able to keep anything down.

But basically, if you can keep some food and water down then you're ok (even though it sucks).  The baby can survive and thrive even if you think you're wasting away to nothing.  Just eat whatever is appealing at the time and dont try to force it.

  • I'm sorry that you are so miserable!!  I was exactly the same way...I never once puked, but lost a ton of weight because I couldn't eat..and spent a lot of time gagging.  For me it got a lot better right around 12 weeks (the nausea at least...I still didn't want to eat much).  I was overweight, so I had plenty of fat reserves to draw on (and the weight loss ended up being a happy bonus once I kept seeing that he was growing on target!)

I think there is no harm in trying the meds if it will help you enjoy this more!

  • I had horrible nausea but almost never vomited.  I did take the Zofran.  I couldn't function at work and I needed to be able to get my job done.  As it turned out I was laid off at like 13-14 weeks or something.  But still the Zofran helped with the nausea, which in turn helped with the food aversions.  I also lost weight in my first tri but I don't think that's terribly uncommon.  If we're lucky to get pregnant again I won't hesitate to take zofran.  I don't believe in suffering for sufferings sake.  Also - my nausea didn't go away until closer to 20 weeks.

  • When I lost 8lbs in the first 7 wks.  I  had severe 24/7 nausea (no vomitting).  I literally had no appetite and was forcing food down.  My peri said he would rather me take meds than not be able to eat.  I did not have the weight to lose to begin with and was carrying twins.  I started with the Zofran around 8wks.  It helped take the edge off to where I could at least get small amounts of food down.  It took me until 20wks to gain back the 8lbs that I lost, and from then I only gained 18lbs.  My babies were small at birth - 4.5lbs and 5.1lbs - and I think if I had not lost that weight in the beginning, I could have gained more and helped them get bigger.  So - my 2cents - take the meds if it helps you keep food/drink down.

  • I was pretty miserable and couldnt work on phenergan because i'd fall asleep at my desk.  I'm all about the Zofran.  Of course i puked everyday (even on Zofran), but at least with it i wasn't nauseous all day.  If you are sick, there's no reason to wait in my opinon.
