TTC After a Loss

XP from MC/PL: RPL Panel ?s

Hi there!

OK, so I am a total needle phobe and have had some of the parts of the RPL Panel (recurrent pregnancy loss), done by my OB, but now that I am moving on to a major fertility clinic because of my losses they want me to do THEIR complete panel.  If you had this done how many vials did they take and did they break it up over a few visits?  It is my understanding that they might test for upto 35 different things and could take anywhere from 18-26 vials.  I can get through 3-4 in one sitting with a lot of help, (I use lidocane cream as a numbing agent, listen to ipod, and have a special "nerve distracting" device that is used on kids with cancer, oh and I even take Xanax for the blood draws when I am not pg), but I can't imagine having that much blood drawn at once.  Please detail your experience so I can mentally prepare for this next step.

Thank you,

Sarah

  • I am horrible at giving blood seeing I have small, deep, rolling veins...they were able to get all 26 vials needed for a full panel at once. I am similar to you, and be sure to tell the phlebotomist beforehand about your difficulties (and that it is not a nurse, a phlebotomist)

OMG!!! How on earth did you manage it?  I am seriously freaking out about 26 vials.  It's worth it and I know I have to do it, but GEEEZ.  Seriously, since you say you have issues similar to me, what got you through it and did it take forever?  I wish I could just have them knock me out for it.

  • I had the RPL done.  My OB ran part of it, that was 9 vials.  My RE ran the rest & added in a couple of things (glucose tolerance and a couple other things).  I had a total of 23 vials run that time, so mine was 32 total, but not all of them were for the RPL.  I honestly don't know how many were just the RPL.  My experience wasn't too bad, but I did end up with alot of bruising because the guy who did it went thru my veins in both arms.

I was told quite a few of the tests require fasting, so if you're going to split it up maybe find out which require you to fast & do those together.  Oh, the other thing they told me (after I was done) is that they can do both arms at once, so maybe that would help?

Well, for one, I brought my husband. Two, I knew it would be necessary. It helped having a phlebotomist that does it all the time. It didn't take very long. Deep calming breaths, lots of fluids beforehand.

  • My experience was a little different b/c they did the panel in the hospital while waiting for things to soften/during induction. I think it was in the 20+ range and the needle is a larger gauge, not going to lie worse blood draw even. Under the circumstances I was probably a touch dehydrated and the nurse was not gentle.

That said they repeated about 10 vials in the office and that was nothing, the lab tech is wonderful and the needle was normal. Like a normal blood draw. I hope your experience is more like this.
