LO congested and coughing ... help?

what can i do to make him a little more comfortable.  He came home from MILs with a cough and stuffy nose... he s having a hard time staying asleep cause he s super fussy.  I imagine he might be getting a cold... any tips or advice on what i can do or what i can give him?

  • I would call the doctor to make sure he doesn't need to be seen. Keep him upright to nap and sleep too.

  • I would give it a day or so before calling a doctor, but my advice is to keep your LO upright as much as possible and hydrated.  Not too much you can do for a cold.  My great aunt was a nurse waaaay back in the day and said to keep rubbing and gently patting your LO's back while you are holding them and it will help keep things broken up.  Don't really know if that is the reason why we haven't had many issues with coughs hanging around too long in either of our LO's (and believe me they get a ton since they are in daycare!), but I am going to keep listening to her advice!
  • DS got his first cold in Dec. just as he turned 4 mos. For the nose: buy saline drops (don't have to be specifically for infants, any will do) and put 2-3 drops in each nostril. Wait a few seconds and suction out with a bulb suction. Works great. For the coughing: not much you can do: cool or warm-mist humidifier at night and for bad bouts, sit in your bathroom with him with the shower running full blast on hot to steam the room. I know they say don't give Tylenol unless he's running a fever but it really helps them sleep and sleep is what they need most to get better! Good luck!
  • I'm having the same problem and I'm out of state so I can't go to my pedi.

    We are:

putting her in a steamy room every few hours

    bulbing out her nose

keeping her elevated to sleep (Fisher Price Rock n Play, baby! I actually went out and BOUGHT a second one this morning because no other method (swing, car seat, etc) worked last night and I know the RNP works from home.

We might try Vicks later on

This.  My son was coughing for what seemed to be forever.  The things above are exactly what we had to do.
