baby sign language

I'm very interested in learning sign language and working to teach my baby. I know some of you have experience with it, and so I wanted to know how you approached it all. The only sign language I currently know is the alphabet : ) Did you buy a kit and work through that? When did you really start trying to teach DC? I appreciate any input.

Re: baby sign language

  • When DH is getting ready he turns C's bed towards the TV and she watches Baby Signing Time... we are hoping she will pick up. Really we just wanted the basics so we bought the first DVD and play that for her... everything else I think would be getting too elaborate and we want her to talk eventually... so the first video has eating signs, pets, diaper, hurt, mom, dad, gma, gpa....

There was also a daily deal on baby signs starter kit, we havent watched those yet... its pretty much the same thing but individual dvds.

Lately when she is fussy and we know she is hungry, we sign milk and then let her eat.

  • I took a baby signing class at the Cfec (theplaceforfamilies.com), then later bought a book of signs to learn a few others that were useful to us. Then just used them the same way you use words. So when handing baby a bottle, say milk and make the sign for milk. I wasn't a huge signer, but we learned enough common words (food, mom, up, etc) to drastically cut down on whining. Good luck.
  • I just look the signs up online.  I'm using signs that are things DD uses everyday, so things like eat, milk, bath, all done, etc.  We add new signs as we do new things with DD.  We started signing early on, maybe 4 months, but more for us to get used to doing it.  She didn't start signing until about 8 mo.
  • I learnt them with DS2 using Signing Times.  I just sign the words I know when I use them verbally now to reinforce them.

  • I use this site: https://www.lifeprint.com/

And I do what everyone else said....  look up a new sign when I need one.  I use a new sign when we've mastered the old one and I want him to learn a new sign.  Start with more, all done, hi/bye.

Then go onto eat, drink, etc...

    Ditto this.

  • I used  this website to look up basic signs:  milk, dog, all done, etc.  We just started adding signs as they were incorporated into our lives.  For example, we read Brown Bear, Brown Bear almost every night so I learned the signs for the animals in that book.  We've also thrown in signs for bath toys like duck and turtle.  We're just having fun with it at this point.
