If it's a synthetic fiber: Simply wash the product once with a bit of diaper safe detergent. I like to use hot water. Dry on medium heat or line if you prefer. That's it! Enjoy your new diapers!
If it's a natural fiber: Some diapers/inserts made from natural fibers come pre-prepped. If so, wash once (like above) if you like and enjoy.
Prep natural fibers and synthetic separately. If you already use diapers, you can prep your new synthetics with a load of dirty diapers. You must prep natural fibers alone - not with dirty diapers.
After they've been prepped you can wash everything together as usual.

I second the boiling of prefolds to speed up the process. Boil in a large pot of water for about 30 minutes. Run a hot wash cold rinse, dry, and you're done!
I have new unbleached prefolds. The directions say to wash and dry three to five times. Does that mean I have to hang them to dry each time they are washed or can I wash them 3 -5 times then dry once?
Thanks!
To reach the fullest absorbency, you'd need to wash and then dry 3-5 times. But prefolds can go in the dryer. So you don't have to hang dry. Also, you can start using them before they reach full absorbency. Just know that you need to change more often until they do reach full absorbency.
Also you can wash them with your other laundry (towels, sheets, etc.) for prepping as long as you use CD safe detergent and don't use fabric softener.

I agree with the previous posters.
Synthetic fabrics include microfiber, microterry, and PUL.
Natural fibers include hemp, cotton, and bamboo.
