Success after IF

~*~shipoopi and kimarino~*~

Looking at the alternatives to the Nikkor 24-70/2.8, it looks like there are two Sigma options (HSM and non-HSM) and one Tamron option. It seems like people like the Tamron a lot better than the non-HSM. I don't see as much on the Sigma HSM as it's newer and more $$. For less than $500, the Tamron 28-75/2.8 seems like a good option!

I'm a Nikon shooter, so if I can ever answer any other questions about equipment, I'll certainly try! :)

  • thank you so much! we are going to be in the city next sunday so i am figuring out a way that we can stop at b&h so i can try the sigma hsm and the tamron before buying. i would really like to buy the nikkor but then i definitely am not getting a new flash this year. when i am ready to buy the flash i am definitely going to be hitting you up with some questions!

mh keeps telling me i should upgrade my body (that sounds so weird). but when i look at the difference between what i have, the d70, and the newer models i don't think it makes sense for the money.

I think you're doing the right thing. I firmly believe you should invest in lenses first. I had a D80 for a long time (very similar to the D70) and vowed to not get a new camera until I felt like I knew how every button on the camera worked and until I needed more features. The Nikkon 24-70 is a heavy lens and it looked ridiculous on my tiny/light D80 (balance was an issue), but I used it that way for a while. Eventually I moved up, but the D80 served me well for a long time.

In the long run, things you might care about on the body are ISO capability (so you can stretch what you can do with available light and "speed up" your lenses to keep up with running toddlers) and sensor size/quality. A full frame sensor is nice because you get a little more width out of your lenses. You have a DX sensor. On Nikons the DX sensor is 1.5x (1.6x on Canon), which means your 50mm lens actually behaves like a 75mm lens. And a 24-70 would be more like a 36-105. Essentially, your camera is adding a little zoom to your lens. If you find that you want more width, a full frame is a way to get it. (Of course there are other reasons to get a full frame, quality-wise, but they are less tangible.) Anyway, I say stick with the D70 or whatever until you want to really upgrade. :)

You definitely should! But be careful, it's an addiction! :)

  • Thanks!

I recently upgraded from the D40X to the D90, mainly so my 50mm 1.4 would AF.  I never used it before because the non-AF thing sucked!  I am happy with my D90 and think it will be all I need for awhile until I actually learn how to use my camera.  ;)

    Off to look at lenses!

I had the 50/1.8 for a while. I just got the 50/1.4G for Christmas and I <3 it. Such a great lens!! I use it 80% of the time now.

Yep, my 18-200 has taken a back seat.  But it's tough with the 50mm sometimes when I am in a small room in the house and furniture gets in the way, etc.
