Success after IF

When did your milk come in?

I had my little guy on Saturday and my milk still has not come in.   The pediatrician said the norn is 2-5 days, day 5 is tomorrow for us.  Just curious as to what others experienced.

I now have to supplement formula b/c my baby is down 12% body weight (from 6lb 7oz to 5lb 10oz's) and dealing with jaundice and has crystals in his urine (a sign of deyhdration).  They are watching him closely and he may have to go back into the hospital for IV and phototherapy.

I'm really bummed that I have to use formula as i wanted to EBF but whatever is best for him is all that really matters, I know.

I feel like my breasts are getting larger / heavier so I hope its soon.  Will it come in suddenly over night?

Thanks ladies!

Re: When did your milk come in?

  • Mine did come in suddenly in like a matter of 4 hours on day 5. I went from colostrum to OMG I'm going to die because my boobs are like rocks in a matter of hours.

Beau was jaundice and had to be on a light bed for 7 days after birth. Thankfully the hospital sent one home with us so we didn't have to stay at the hospital although, that probably would have been easier - to stay at the hospital. He had to be on it 24/7 except for feeding and diapering. :(

  • Mine took about four days.  It was *just* starting to come in while I was at the hospital.  I began pumping at the hospital, though, on maybe day 2?  I also rented the hospital pump for a week to use at home.  I hear you on being disappointed on using formula.  We elected to supplement in the hospital for her jaundice, and I felt crushed at the time.  But a year away from it, after EBF the rest of this time, I can tell you it was no big deal.  It was what was best for her at the time.

  • Mine came in on day 4 for both of my kids.  Have you been pumping?  A nurse in the hospital told me that it would help my milk come in.  When it came in for DS, I was at Babies R Us and I think it literally came when we were in the store.  All of a sudden we were in the car and I was SUPER engorged.  It hurt so badly at first.  Good luck :)
It took over four years to be diagnosed with PCOS. We TTC #1 for 18 months, did 5 rounds of Clomid and finally moved onto IVF...which worked! Throughout our IF journey, we suffered 3 miscarriages. We conceived both DD and DS without treatment.

  • Mine came in on Day 5, which is on the back end of normal, but my pedi wasn't worried. But my guy was bigger than yours at birth and losing a little weight wasn't as big a deal. Don't worry about the formula...once your milk comes in he'll catch up!
  • Day 5 for me too.  And we also dealt with jaundice.  Sam had formula for a couple of days, but by the time he was a week old he was EBF.  Don't worry about formula for a few days - it's a mental thing, I know - it was really hard for me too. Once he gets a bit bigger and heavier, he will nurse better and that will help with your supply. Congrats!

  • Have you been putting him on the breast regardless if your milk is in or not? Or pumped for 20 mins at a time 3-4x a day?

Mine came in really early but I really believe the "demand" theory holds true here too! If you're not putting him on the breast 1st each feeding, I would start immediately + adding some pumps.

Good luck - and I agree, no matter when it comes in, it seems to come with a vengence!
  • I had Caroline at lunch time on Wednesday, and it came in on Friday night.

It was weird...my boobs had no milk one minute, and then, WHAM, milk...in a matter of a few minutes.  Crazy.

Just keep putting him to the breast as much as possible, and pump....you'll get there.

  • Dd was born on Sunday morning and my milk came in Tuesday morning.  It happened over night.  I went from having "normal" boobs and waking up feeling like someone had shoved rocks in my bra.

Ditto the pps advice and keep putting him on the boob to encourage your milk to come in.

  • Jacob was born on a Thursday evening.  I took a shower on Saturday night - maybe 52 hours after giving birth and came out looking like a porn star.

I was putting him to my breast every 2 hours or more during the first 36 hours.  Then he was put into the NICU and I was BFing and/or pumping every 2-3 hours after that.  The NICU has a very strict feeding schedule - every 3 hours for everyone.

  • I want to say it was around day 4.  But I just wanted to let you know that I had to supplement also before my milk came in, as Ivy was small to start with, had lost a little too much weight, and had not pooped.  I was disappointed also, but after my milk came in I never had another issue, and I still consider her EBF, despite that little bit of formula during the first week.

  • My milk didn't come in until Day 7, and even then I didn't experience the "rock hard" boobs everyone else talks about. Mine felt like it came in gradually. I had a c-section though and my pedi, my ob, and my lc all said that often milk comes in later for c-section mamas bc the body is focused on recovering from the trauma of surgery. My daughter was also very jaundiced and lost 13% of her birth weight so we had to supplement with formula. Our LC showed us how to feed using a syringe and tubing so we wouldn't have to introduce a bottle nipple. It was a PITA to do, but worth it to keep my baby used to latching on to the breast.

  • My milk came in about 4 days after they were born (they were born on Friday at 1 pm, my milk came in on Tuesday about noon).  It did happen really suddenly.

We formula-fed from the start since they were so little and were told that they could not afford to lose any weight.  I was concerned about it, worried that they would prefer the bottle over the breast, but once my milk came in, they were only too happy to latch and start breastfeeding.

I hope it's soon-- keep us posted!

  • I was the end of day 5 before my milk came in.  I left the hospital on day 5 and was terrified because I still didn't have any milk!  But by that night I was leaking like crazy!
