Eating habits

Stevers post got me wondering. I see alot of the babies are eating well & seem to eat a variety. Do you put a variety of food on babies plate? Do you alternate giving them the different foods on the plate or do they finish one thing before moving onto another?

If I put carrots & broccoli on her plate, she'll eat the carrots & refuse the broccoli (even though she likes it), until there are no more carrots. Other times she gets mad & wants more carrots. I have better luck if I bring them out one after she's finished with the other. Also if I try to sneak some meat into something & she tastes it, she then refuses to eat another bite even if there is no more in the food. Grr!. Then I have to make her another meal that is totally different. I sure hope these eating habits change.

  • Charlie is exactly the same way.  To.The.Letter.   It's making me insane!  He has never been a vigorous eater, even at birth, so it's a constant battle to get food into him.   Still trying to wean him off the bottle, too.

  • I usually give her everything at once, and let her pick what she eats.  I used to have to do it a little at a time, or she'd get overwhelmed and throw it all on the floor.  Sometimes I'll wait and give her the fruit or other dessert last, to try to encourage veggie eating.

  • we've been very fortunate with sabrina with just about everything- it's really crazy how lucky we are and how easy going she is with everything. she used to not eat much at all but ever since we dropped a bottle and for sure since we only give her sippy cups during the day, she eats and eats and eats. meat, veggies, fruits... i haven't really seen her turn much of anything down yet though she certainly has her preferences (favorites: tuna fish, peas, home fries- not all together). what she eats, she eats. when she's done, that's it. i won't make anything else- not that i've had to (sometimes i may give a yogurt or apple sauce to make sure she had enough).

  • The only thing D refuses is avocado. Other than that - total little piggy. Although, I typically eat one food at a time (segregated eater) so I find I feed her that way too. If I put everything on her tray at once, she'll either try to shove everything in her mouth until she looks like a chipmunk or will play with it/throw it on the floor.

  • M's a good eater, but his tastes change all the time. I just offer him what he likes and switch it up if whatever it is has fallen out of favor - Cheerios have become Wheetabix, broccoli has become green beans and ground turkey has become chicken. The only constants are toast, bananas and blackberries.
  • Ada is a good eater but she exerts her independence from time to time by refusing something we know damm well that she loves. I just continue to offer her all sorts of non-junky stuff whether I think she "likes" it or not. Sometimes she surprises me though. And she will eat different stuff for us vs. the nanny (e.g. she'll eat Siggi's yogurt for us but only Trader Joes for the nanny)

  • S has inherited her dad's tastebuds and will eat anything - thank goodness.  I used to just give her one thing at a time until she finished, but I stopped that.  I thought that might contribute to her being picky about food touching or eating one thing at a time (like I am).

Now I give her several things at a time.  She tends to eat one thing until it is done and then moves to the next one, but I have seen her switch back and forth sometimes.  Similar to your LO, sometimes she whines that she is out of something and stops eating until I give her more of whatever.  But usually she just moves on to the next food.

  • It really kind of depends - i usually have a few items on a plate and maybe something in a bowl.  I will put 1-2 pieces on her tray, or if she's not being piggy let her take from the bowl/plate or try her spoon, so we're usually mixing things up a bit.  However if there is pasta with red sauce, I try to feed her some veg first and maybe a fruit after because once she sees the pasta, there's no going back!  She will howl if I put it down to try and give her something else, even if it's something she likes.  She will sometimes do this with keffir too.  She's also learning to dip, so the other night she just wanted to dip her turkey bits into the squash soup...
