Medication and drug testing Q

I feel more comfortable posting here... than asking my prof, Stick out tonguebut I am taking a CNA class, and we have to have a drug test. I take Clonazapem (sp?) at night sometimes for sleep/anxiety and was wondering if that was going to show up in my drug panel. I would rather not have to get in to it with the teacher if possible, but also don't want to have to mess with failing a drug test over this and then getting a note ect...

anyone know if this will make a difference?

Re: Medication and drug testing Q

  • I've never had to take a drug test, but I would think that they would be testing for illicit drugs, not prescription, so unless it's an opiate of some sort (on which I have no idea) that may test as something illegal (i.e. poppyseed muffin) I would think it would be ok, but hopefully someone with better background than mine will answer.

  • Depends what they are testing for.  If you come into the ER, benzodiazepines (Valium, Ativan, Clonopin, etc) are something they routinely test for.  My DH has failed a drug test for work before (he's on liver #4, thus lots of meds), and as long as he had an active prescription and was under the care of physician, it wasn't an issue.  Usually there is a section on the paperwork where you can "claim" anything that you have taken in a certain amount of time (RX or otherwise).  And, I'm also a pharmacist in a hospital :)

  • When we did drug testing through work, they look for illicit drugs.  Some prescription drugs can show up, but usually the drug testing company will follow up with the person being tested directly, and with a prescription showing the drug is prescribed, that is it.  That information is never passed on to the person requesting the testing.

  • some jobs test for benzos, some don't. just answer the questions they ask with simple clean statements. taking rx'd sleep meds as prescribed is no big deal.
