I had been complaining for a couple days that baby had dropped and my crotch hurt so bad to the point of tears. I called the docs office on Wednesday and she got me on for an appointment on Thursday morning. I didn't have any contractions or anything so I wasn't too worried.
I got to the doctor and told her what was going on. I had told her about a couple bouts with heavier discharge over the weekend and she decided to do a "clean exam" meaning just speculum first... no jelly. ouch! So as soon as she looked in there, there was a good amount of fluid and she was convinced that my water was broken. Her fern test said it was negative but she wasn't sure so she sent me to L&D. She refused to check my cervix because she didn't want to mess with anything else.
My son was at school, hubby was at work... so I stopped and got Austin and we went on to dh's work because I had been calling for 45 minutes and no answer on his phone or the office phone. We went back home, packed up the kids bags and dropped them to grandma.
I arrieved about 3pm and was told that I was only fingertip (previously been 2cm?) and that their test was that my water did not break but there was still fluid leaking and it looked like AF. It had started to snow and we live an hour away from home. The decided to have me walk for about 2 hours to see if it changed my cervix or anything happens after the walk. I went back and my cervix had not changed but my contractions went from hardly anything to ever 6-8 minutes and pretty strong. The could not admit me because my water was not broken and since I was 35 weeks, they could not stop my contractions. They could however, give me a shot of narcotic pain medication and try to "slow" them and make me more comfortable until something happened. We went with that, waited two hours and through shift change and the next MW came in and checked me. I went from fingertip to 2-3 cm in the couple hours. She went to call the doctor to see if they would keep me or send me home and just after she walked out of the room, my WATER REALLY BROKE! I was not going home!
My water broke at 9pm and I stayed 2-3 cm until about 9pm the next night. I had got an epidural earlier hoping to relax and get things going. It was not a great one and they had to redo it. About 9pm, I was at 5-6cm... 1130pm I was getting flat out, MISERABLE! I asked for the doctor and she said there wasn't any change. About midnight, she came back and I was at 7cm. She went to leave and I told her not to go far because I will go quick from here (did with the last two)... she left and said she wouldn't be far. I called her back 10 minutes later and I was at 9cm... and I informed her that I would be pushing... it was 1225. She had to make some phone calls because she had two other patient to see. The other doc came in, they called peds and I had three good contractions and pushes. He was born at 1240am on the 22nd.
it was overall, a very easy delivery... the hard part was him going to the NICU.
5lbs 14 oz and 19.25 inches long. he is good size for 35 weeks. he is still in the NICU. He was on a ventilator for 36 hours and today is breathing without any assistance at all. He will have 7 days of antibiotics and now is working on feeding... starting tomorrow. It should be about another week before he will come home.
Re: Xander's Birth Story (long)
Wow, that nurse/doctor wounded like a real gem. I hate it when we try to tell them something and they act like we don't know better than them. (regarding how we know our bodies, not medical knowledge.)
Glad it all went well then! Did you have an epidural? It didn't sound like you did, but I'm just curious.
While I was at the doctors office, it was her opinion that the discharge may have been from a protective barrier. I don't know the name for it but she said that there is a small membrane that protects your bag of waters. She thought it may have been that protective lining from AF. She said that she has seen it before where she checks someone in the office where that has happened and it could be days or even hours but it would just be a matter of time before my water did break. She was right, it was about 10 hours after she checked it and my water broke.
i just couldn't keep that doctor in the room. i practically begged her. and when she told me i was 9cm with an anterior lip... she said it with an "i am sorry, nothing we could do" tone. she ended up leaving.... i didn't mind because i liked the other doc on call better. lol even after delivery, i asked "So what, do we call that about 25 minutes?" They all laughed and said they wouldn't give it more than 10 minutes. And "You weren't lying when you said it would go quick!" Suprisingly, as fast as I went from 7-10 and only had a few pushes, I didn't tear at all. They didn't have time to break the bed down and they ended up delivering and putting him in that spot on the bed.
yes, i had two epidurals. the first one didn't work worth the crap compared to the second one! when things started getting painful, i did have a good hour or so of back labor and that is when the epidural didn't seem to do any good. i felt like someone wacked me across the back with a baseball bat, just below my kidneys.
I forgot to mention that he had the cord around his neck, under one arm and was all tangled up. The doc kept saying it was a good thing the cord wasn't too short. lol

Wow what a crazy story! Were you surprised you had him that early, or have you been expecting PTL?
Congrats on your new little guy, can't wait to see pictures!
Thanks!!!
I had my first son at 34 weeks. With this pregnancy, I had PTL stopped at 29 weeks and a very irritable uterus after that. Everything was going well and there was no reason that he went that early... other than he just wanted to come out. Our goal was 34 weeks and I made it 35 w 2d.
