i am thinking of getting a new lens before our trip since i will have time to play while we are away. i have a 17-210mm f3.5-6.3 and a 50mm f1.4
i was thinking of getting a 17-70 f2.8-4. obviously my main subjects are the beans. i love my fixed lens but it can be a little inconvenient sometimes. i like my zoom but it is no good in lower light and my flash is meh at best (i am going to get a new flash eventually but want to try a few different ones out before i commit).
anyone have a lens they love and would recommend? i would like it to have some zoom and have decent ability to shoot with available light.
Re: slr girls
Hmm. I could spend a lot of your money if you let me!
Available light shooting is all about the aperture. You want a lens that can go low (like your 50/1.4) and stay there. The 17-70/2.8-4 that you mention would be good at 17mm (really wide angle), but available light shooting is going to be tough at 70mm (where it can't go lower than 4).
I don't know what kind of camera you have, but both Canon and Nikon make pro zooms. I believe they are both 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 meaning they both can do a 2.8 aperture at all focal lengths, which is awesome, but they are really expensive. You pay for the awesomeness.
This is why the best bang for your buck in terms of aperture for the money is in fixed focal length lenses. You have the 50/1.4, so you know that that's an affordable way to get a great aperture (nice bokeh/blur, excellent in available light).
Blah blah blah. I've said a lot and haven't recommended anything other than really expensive lenses.
I would just say, not knowing a ton about the specific lens you are looking at (glass quality etc) that the 17-70 sounds like it overlaps a ton with what you already have. You really are only getting a couple clicks of aperture more than what you have (2.8 and 3.2) at 17mm and my guess is that is the same throughout the range.
what cha wanna spend? and what's it going on?
I LOVE LOVE LOVE renting glass for trips and for 1-2 weeks before I invest.
My favs are the (Canon) 70-200L (careful, HUGE!) , 24-70L (still kinda big) , 35L, and if you want to just pick up a GREAT cheaper walkaround lens, you can't miss with the Tameron 28-75, which is the 24-70 knock'off, so to speak.
Thank you for asking this. I want a new lens, too, and I am in a similar situation with my 18-200 3.5-5.6 and 50mm 1.4.

i forgot to mention i have a nikon d70, that would have been helpful
kme930 - i was looking at a 24-70mm f2.8 and found a well priced one from sigma, but the reviews mention that it is bulky, but it is $300 less than another sigma model and like a third of the price of the nikkor. as much as i want the nikkor i wasn't looking to make that kind of investment.
davez: where do you rent the lenses from?
check the facts on the photog board, or ask them. I rent local (best deal ever, I pick up fri, return monday noon for ONE night's price) I think it's like borrowlenses.com and rentglass.com or the like, there's a couple, not sure. I wanna say about 100-200 a week, but worth it before you spend $1K on glass.
For vacation, I would do something around the 24-70L.... not sure what the "L" glass is in Nikon-speak, but that jump in quality really does make a diff. You get used to the bulk quick, just make sure you have room in your sac for it. Bu

LOL, I'm selling a CANON lens, discounted of course!
I've used borrowlenses.com as well. And for Nikon, the 24-70mm would be perfect, I think!

Kimmers, you want the Tam 28-75. such a GREAT lens. I seriously STILL reach for that, even when I have a bag of L stuff, sometimes. It's fool proof, and I love love love it. It's sharp tack at 2-3 but still looks lower.... and I wanna say it's around $400-500?? (amazon, B&H or Adorama only I suggest) Great lens.
Gracias, lady. Off to go look. I bought my 18-200 at amazon and the 50 1.4 at B&H. Happy with both.
Oh, did I mention I have a NikonD90?After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
I have the Nikkor one (the 24-70/2.8, which is the equivalent of the 24-70L for Canon), but I'm cuckoo for lenses. I don't know whether Tamron or Sigma make a reasonable equivalent. I'll do a little research...
