Birth Stories with Cervidil & Pitocin?

My doctor has scheduled me for an induction on Friday as I will be 41 weeks pregnant at that point.  Because I have not dialated at all, but am 75% effaced, they scheduled me for Cervadil in the evening and Pitocin to begin in the morning.  Do any of you have experience with this?  I guess I am nervous that I am not dialating at all, and how will the labor progess if my body doesn't take to the induction mediciens.  I would appreciate any advice or experience you all have had with this (bad and good) to help me understand what normally happens with these.  TIA!

Re: Birth Stories with Cervidil & Pitocin?

  • Gosh, you probably don't want to hear mine. I went in with no progress, did Cervidil and Pitocin, 40 hours of labor, 3 hours of pushing, 3 vacuum attempts, multiple drugs, 2 epidurals, a big episiotomy, fetal distress, maternal distress, emergency c-section. That's the short story. I wouldn't induce again for anything. Some people have really good experiences. there's a site with a ton of birth stories- maybe birthstories.com? Something like that? Good luck to you!

  • I had Cervadil done twice and it didn't work.  Just gave me contractions with no dilation whatsoever.

Went in for the induction a couple days later.  The Pit is horrible.  It hurts so much.  Didn't do much for the dilation either.  Once she got me dilated enough to squeeze the hook in to break my water, it still took awhile to get to 10.  I was on Pit from 8am until 1am when I was finally able to start pushing.

Sorry it wasn't more positive. :(

  • I just posted a ? on 0-6 board about this... got a bunch of responses.. good luck to you!

  • Yep had both.  I went in 9 days before my due date because my BP was high.  I got there at 7, was hooked up to the IV at 8, and the cervadil was put in at 9.  I had to lay on my back for 2 hours to let it "do its thing."  After that I was able to get up and walk around til 2 am when they started pitocin.  Oh btw, the cervadil didn't do much for me contraction-wise but I think it softened me up.  The pitocin wasn't bad at first but then at 8 am they broke my water and all hell broke loose.  The pitocin caused my contractions to double peak and I was in so much pain from that, and I ended up getting an epi when I was a 3-4.

However, since you are much further along than I was when I went to be induced, maybe you will have better luck.  My friend was 4 days early and responded VERY well to both and had her son very quickly.

  • I had both.  They gave me cervidil and about 4 hours later they started the pitocin.  They cervidil did its job, and did not hurt at all.  Once they started the pitocin I was in alot of pain.  They made my contractions hurt twice as bad.  I then had to get an epidural I was hurting so bad.  I was in labor for 16 hours.  My son's heart rate kept dropping so I had to go for an emergency c-section.  I would not recommend getting induced if you don't have to.  If you can wait an extra week I would.  It is hard and you want to see your baby but I would recommend waiting until the baby is ready.
  • I was induced at 41 weeks w/Pit only. ?My experience wasn't quite as difficult as the other women who have posted. I checked into the hospital at 8a.m., and had my baby at 6 p.m. ? I had an epi which wore off ?- and yowza! ?I was beggin for more drugs after experiencing a few pitocin contractions. ?I had a really tough couple of hours of pushing yet getting no where. ?My OB almost opted for a C-section. ?She ended up vaccuming DD out.

I'm having my second baby in March, and have been thinking about going natural. ?I had a lot of tearing and it took me a good few months to hear (though I did eventually feel as good as new). ?But my first baby was big, and I'm scared of having an even bigger baby. ?I would get induced again, if needed. ?We'll see..... ?Good luck!?

  • I had pit at 39 weeks 6 days due to high blood pressure. I was already in early labor, 3 cm and 85% effaced when I arrived at the hospital so they put off giving me pit to break my water and see what progress if any would happen. 2 hours later nothing so they started the pit at 10pm and I had Claire at 549am after 49 minutes of pushing. The epi worked on contration pain but the PRESSURE from her decending was AWFUL. I tore and ended up with 35 stitches and corrective surgery 4 months later. The pit does not give your body a chance to stretch as it should so even with an episiotomy I tore.

My friend J was induced with both of her daughters and she had super stress free labors and no pain so take everyones story with a grain of salt EVERYBODY reacts differently.

    Good Luck Friday!

  • I had both.  the cervidil did nothing for me.  Pitocin started at 6am, water broke at 8am, was at 10cm at 12:15ish and had DS at 12:43pm.  I also got the epi and nubane (sp).  Skip the nubane!!!
  • keep in mind I was only 36wks 5 days when induced for dd (my first baby)... I was induced b/c of pree... 4+ protein, hyper reflexes, high b/p, headaches, spots, poor vision...

total induction time, 43 hrs.... day number 1 (admitted at 6a) was cervadil... I did have contractions and did thin some, but no dilation... had painful back labor pains all night and into the next day... fyi, jacuzzi tub is great for this... they let me in after the cervadil was removed, before pit started.  pit started day 2 at 6a....  no dilation, no dilation, no dilation... 5 pm... 1 CM!!!!  YAY!  huh? (most painful check I have ever experience in my life, I jumped off the bed and nearly broke the OBs fingers) ... b/p super high by this point (up to 150s/120s) ... ob decided to have epidural started and break my water (I couldn't make any kind of decisions at this point... my mind was in a fog)... mag was started when my water was broken (all of this around 8p)...  11pm I wake up with the feeling of pressure... 9 cm!!!!!   Started pushing... pushed... pushed... pushed... babies heart rate is low... staying in the 60s now... ob askes for OR team to be called in for a stat section.. I yell hell no (I worked with those people)...  I pushed her out before the OR team got there.  :)

for baby number 2... started with labile pressures at 37wks... induced at 38wk 2d, was 2cm dilated... supposed to have cervadil, but no room in the inn the night before... so started pit at 8am that morning... by 5pm, only 4cm... (I knew I hadn't dilated much, I felt too good, with no meds).  membranes stripped (means nothing but it is painful).... Ob came at 6:15 ... decides to break my water (6:30ish)... by 6:45 I'm shaking , feeling pain and pressure, begging for epidural, 5cm... 7:15 anesthesia finally arrives (seemed like ages ... lol) ... epi catheter placed.. I lay down, as anesth inserts med, nurse checks me... 9 cm!   Ob called, I'm told to lay back and try not to push with my body.. yeah, right... I manage, thanks to epi kicking in...  ds is born at 8:05p after pushing for only 3 contractions... (no tearing!!!  had a 2degree with dd).

Good luck!  I hope you have an easy induction!

  • I was induced with Pitocin, was only in labor for 6 hours, and pushed for 20 minutes. Of course I got an epidural, so I slept painlessly through all of it (except for the pushing part). I wish I could help you on the cervadil part, but I have nothing but good things to say about Pitocin!
  • I didn't have the cervidil just the Pit. It wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected it to be, in fact I had planned to get an epidural right away, but I made it to 7cm before I got the epidural. Pit was started at 8am, water was broke at 8:50. At 4pm I started pushing and at 4:33pm Parker was born. We were blessed and everything went very smoothly. I hope my next pregnancy/delivery goes as smoothly as this one did. Good luck!!

  • you've probably given birth already but I'll post about my experience for anyone else reading this!

    ?

Yeah, unfortunately Pitocin definitely makes labor wayyyy more painful. My pain threshhold is quite high, and I was asking for drugs when I was only 2 or 3 cm dilated. ?I haven't gone into labor for #2 yet, so I can't personally compare the pain with a non-induced birth, but from what I've heard from other moms, Pitocin really has a huge impact on pain intensity.?

I did get an epidural at 7 cm, and then dilated to 10. Then, I pushed for 2.5 hours, and ended up having a c-section b/c her head was left opcippital transverse (almost, but not quite, sunny side up).?

Hope everything went ok for you!?
