stripping membranes at 37 weeks

Yesterday I had my 36 week appointment, and the doctor checked me.  I wasn't dilated at all, but my cervix was almost 75% effaced!  He said next week at my 37 week appointment we could go ahead and strip my membranes, which could start contractions, but may not.  Has anyone heard of this, had it done, or know someone who has had it done?  And if so could you tell me what happened?  I'm scared to get my hopes up, but its kind of exciting!

  • I wouldn't have it done that early. Have you had any contractions yet? Even though it only MAY start contractions, I think it's best to let the body contract naturally at first. So, at least then you know your body is preparing and things are not being rushed if LO needs to stay in longer.

I would never consider that at 37 weeks. Way too early.

  • My doctor won't consider doing anything to help things along until 39 weeks.

I've been 3 cm for over a week, am 70% effaced, and am measuring 6 weeks ahead with a massive baby - and we're still not talking about anything until 39 weeks.

  • There are some military doctors who will strip membranes at 37wks, but that's a special reason- it's with an amnio, and only if your DH is going to be deployed when you deliver and him not being there is putting undue stress on you and baby. Even then, that's not to say that stripping will send you into labor- it's just a way to TRY to start things along. It doesn't always work, especially so early.

I'd tell the OB I'd rather wait a couple weeks.

  • That's silly - much too early. Why not wait for your body to go into labor on its own? Stripping hurts like hell and it's unnecessary unless you need it for a medical reason to get baby out.

Please do!  Because while I understand what everyone is saying, I trust my doctor and do not think he would do anything that would harm me or baby.

we did a growth ultrasound at 35 weeks when i started dialating at 34 weeks and baby was in position and at a healthy weight. the drs were happy to get me to 37 weeks b/c they didnt think i would get that far....(DS was born @ 36 weeks and DD was born @ 38 weeks). my dr said it would be ok for me to have this procedure done this weeks @ 37 1/2 weeks......i trust her.

    update for you:
stripping membranes is very uncomfortable (as i assumed) but it only lasted 10secs tops. my dr said that baby had dropped from -3 station to -1 station since my last visit (5days ago) but im stuck @ 3cm and 55% effaced. she said if the baby is ready the procedure will work and it wont work if the baby needs more time to bake. we shall see. i didnt have any spotting after the appt but i am cramping.
