Talk to me about cerclages/cervical "issues"

Hi Ladies-

I did not have a good OB appt today :(

I have been having cramping on and off this week with some minor contractions.

They did an u/s to check my cervical length. At my NT 3 weeks ago, I saw the print out and it was at 3.4.

She did not tell me what it was measuring today, but she said it was "normal." However, when they applied pressure during the u/s, it shortened to 2.9.

She is having me come back in 2 weeks for another check.

I'm not an idiot. I am only 17 weeks. I know that if at the next check it has shortened, I am looking at bedrest and/or a cerclage.

If you have experience, can you tell me about it? When was the cerclage placed and how short was your cervix?

She did not put me on bedrest, just said no sex and no heavy lifting. I know that if it were really "bad," she would have done more.

Thanks!

Re: Talk to me about cerclages/cervical "issues"

  • I'm sorry hun.

I'm probably not a good example, but I had an emergency cerclage at 23 weeks.  I was already 1 - 2 cm dialated (for unknown reasons.)  The procedure went fine and was holding fast, but I got an unterine infection (either before or during the surgery) and had to deliver at 23w5d.  It's best (obviously) to get it before dialation b/c the risk of infection is much less then.

There was just someone on PAIF who had a cerclage done a little sooner (GA) than me and just delivered at around 35 weeks.  Lovebug, maybe?  Sorry - my brain is fried today so I may be off but I remember being so happy that the cerclage worked for her.  I'd also check out the High risk board (if you haven't already).

Take it easy, and be sure to go in right away if you notice any changes.  In hindsight I had been having contractions/back pain for over 12 hours by the time I got into my RE.  I always wonder if I had caught it sooner if my outcome would have been different.

I hope that cervix of yours holds tight.

  • I had cervical issues my whole pregnancy. Due to a uni-cornate uterus, I was at high risk for PTL from cervical shortening. They watched me closely and I never needed a cerclage. I managed to stay above 3cm until 29 weeks when I went into PTL and it went downhill quickly. I did 7 weeks of bedrest before delivering at 36 weeks.

  • I had an emergency cerclage placed at 16w1d and was on strict bedrest until I went into labour and delivered at 24w1d.

With DS I had a transabdominal cereclage placed before I got pregnant and my cervix never dropped below 3.5 cm.  I did not have any bedrest etc. with this pregnancy.

  • I was told anything over 2.5 was good! I had funneling that went down to 1 and I was contracting, so I was put on meds to stop the contractions.

If you have questions please ask away, page me, I am always trying to lurk:)

  • A loss at 16wjs. Cervix measued 2.5 two wks prior. 2 Preventative cerclahes at 12w4d meant two 39w plus pregnancies. I had shortening with my 2nd at 27 wks and put myself on nearest. Bedrest sorry. My high risk dr hates prescribing nearest. I did it even with a cerclage.
  • I had a cerclage with the twins and a cerclage with Chris.  My cervix was 1.5 with the twins at 21 weeks.  I was on bedrest from 18 weeks until I delivered them at 32 weeks.  I had a cerclage at 23w6d with Chris and was on bedrest for 4 weeks.  I delivered at 35 weeks due to HELLP syndrome.

  • I have a history of pre-term labor and with Gwen my cervix was funneling with pressure as well.  I was not put on bedrest or given a cerclage, which I was shocked by.  They did continue to monitor the funneling and measurements every 2 weeks.  I was told the same thing as you which was to take it easy.  I ended up making it until 34 weeks and delivered due to placental issues.  Good luck!
